Star Wars triumphantly returned to movie theaters on Dec. 18th, 2015 with episode seven "The Force Awakens", the first theatrical film to take place after "Return of The Jedi" and the first Star Wars movie since 2005. It's been over 30 years since we last saw our heroes and a lot of things have changed. We're introduced to new characters including Rey, a scavenger on a desert planet, Finn, a First Order Stormtrooper who deserts, Poe, a hotshot X-Wing fighter pilot and his trusty sidekick, the droid BB-8. Sent to retrieve some crucial intel, BB-8 encounters Rey on Jakku and needs to get this information to the Resistance. The chase is on as everyone wants this data, including new bad guy Kylo Ren, with his red lightsaber. Over the course of the movie, we're reintroduced to our old favorites as this fast-paced movie races towards its conclusion.

Since Disney acquired Lucasfilm, there are plans to have a new Star Wars movie every year, either a sequel or what they are calling "anthology films", essentially one-offs. In December 2016, the new movie will be "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" detailing how the Rebels stole the plans to the Death Star, taking place right before Episode 4: "A New Hope".

Disney paid $4.05 billion for Lucasfilm back in 2012 but they have already gotten their money's worth. Directed by J.J. Abrams, "The Force Awakens" grossed over $934 million domestically and over $1 billion internationally, leading to a cumulative total of over $2 billion during its theatrical run. It is now the third biggest grossing movie of all time and the highest grossing movie of all the Star Wars movies to date. It's also done very well with moviegoers and film critics, garnering a 92% fresh rating from RottenTomatoes.com. Disney has certainly gotten their money's worth so far. Wink

This movie drops on DVD and Blu-Ray Tuesday, April 5th. There are three exclusive editions for this movie as well, so let's find out the details.

Best Prices:

I did a price comparison on both the internet and this week's circulars with Amazon.com, Best Buy, Bestbuy.com, BarnesandNoble.com, Costco.com (no listings for some reason), DeepDiscount.com, Frys.com, FYE, FYE.com, Kmart.com/Sears.com, Overstock.com, Rakuten.com, Target, Target.com, Toys R Us, ToysRUs.com, and Walmart.com. Unless otherwise noted or known by me, the prices are the same in store and online at their respective websites. I noted shipping in the price rankings because of the competition between stores, but I will only be comparing base prices of the movie. Shipping costs will not factor into the price rankings as a result.

Please note that with these price rankings, these prices are as current as I am aware of. Walmart's in-store prices don't always match its website prices, for example. As a result, these prices are as accurate as I can verify from the internet and flyers from the newspaper, I don't put prices in the rankings that I cannot verify.

I fully expect there to be further price changes on Tuesday when the movie is released to stores. I'll be updating this thread again on Tuesday and double-checking all the prices.

For example, in the past, Kmart.com/Sears.com will presumably sell all versions of a movie, but there are no listings for it online but only in Kmart's circular. So I can only rank the price at the store and not the price on the website. I also know from experience that FYE's B&M store prices are the same as those on their website, so I made one listing for both. In other words, these stores reserve the right to change their prices and I might not know about it. Smilie That's where the SD community can help each other out and if new or different prices are verified, I will edit my post accordingly.

A note about Walmart's prices, they have proven to be notoriously regional in the past and they rarely have a weekly circular available online. When it is available online, the circular prices in it are national or mostly national. Hopefully, the prices online will be national, with little price variation. Wink

I'm making a slight adjustment to my price rankings, as I will now only include the top five prices in this thread. Basically, if a retailer's price stinks, it doesn't get to be a part of this compilation list. Big Grin I will still do a full price comparison to all the stores I listed above, but only the best prices will be included here. So if you don't see a particular store on the list, it means their price wasn't good enough to be included. It also means that if their price isn't included here, you should go to a retailer whose price WAS included on this list and try to get the other retailer to price match it, if possible.

Here are the conclusions:

Don't forget that you can price match any edition of this DVD or Blu-Ray to the store of your choice, if they have a price matching policy. There might also be some store-specific coupons or online coupon codes floating around that could help bring some of these prices down further. Given the price competition for this movie, there are some great price-matching opportunities, especially due to the aggressive price matching policies stores like Best Buy and Target continue to utilize.

__________________________________________________________________________

I included as much pertinent information on this new release that I could find so everyone can make a more educated decision on whether to purchase this movie or not, as well as which edition they prefer.

For those of you who read these threads start to finish, there is plenty of detail for everyone. I've noticed that a lot of the questions people put in these threads could be answered if they read the OP carefully. I would heartily encourage you to do so, as it might answer the question(s) you have before you even have to ask. Wink

And that is the end of this compilation, my first New Release Thread for the year 2016. Only three retailer exclusives this time around, thankfully. It should make it easier to decide what edition and which exclusive you might want.

Remember, when you're making a sequel to Star Wars, make sure you provide plenty of great new characters, special-effects-fueled action, plenty of mystery, intrigue and fan service moments. This means more people will buy all that merchandise the Disney marketing machine is putting out there. Greedy

The two movies are remarkably similar if you think about it. Don't believe me? Check this out:

4/5 - RELEASE DAY UPDATE: Target and Target.com have changed their price today for the DVD to $16.99, now the BEST PRICE for the DVD only edition of this movie and bumping everyone else down in the rankings by one. All rankings for the DVD have been adjusted accordingly in the OP. All of the other prices and rankings for the DVD/BluRay/Digital HD Copy Combo Pack have stayed the same so there's no adjustments to be made there. Happy hunting and may the Force be with you today! That's just what they've made in box office. They actually make more on merchandise than on the movies themselves. http://www.forbes.com/sites/natal...0d6e5e41a4

Plus, think of how much more merchandise they will move once they've got 'Star Wars Land' up and running at their parks. They are doing very well on this deal...

The Disney Store offered a lithograph set with their pre-order edition. I thought that was kind of neat, so I ordered from them despite it not being the best price option. http://www.disneystore.com/star-w...9/1000318/

Doesn't Best Buy also offer a steelbook exclusive edition? It may be worth adding to the list.

I initially added it to the Wiki, as the SlickDeals website wasn't displaying it properly. But I fixed the problem and it's all included in the original post now. Look under the "Deals & Exclusives" section of the post. Smilie

Target sent me a note saying their bonus content was all going to be downloadable, none of it on disc.

Which sucks but whatever.

Great post, just one small correction to the digital copy. Flixster is not part of DisneyMovies Anywhere. Also the code can be redeemed at Digitalcopyplus.com which gives a choice of itunes, Vudu, Amazon, Google Play and also FandangoNow (formerly MGo). Fandangonow is not part of DisneyMoviesAnywhere (? yet). After redeemimg in DC+, you can go and get the DMR points (150) by redeeming on DisneyMovierewards.

If you're inclined to buy more SW stuff, the weekly Target ad has a coupon for $10 off wyb $50 worth of Star Wars items. However you can only buy 1 movie per coupon. Excludes Lego and PS4 bundle.

btw-If you pre-ordered from Target on the $18.99 w/$5 gift card deal, your movie has probably already shipped. My UPS is account is showing it was shipped on 4/1/16, due for delivery 4/5/16. ymmv

can anyone vouch for the Google play or vudu hdx versions of this quality wise?

I obviously want the bluray but know I will have to double dip down the line for either 3d or 4k bluray later this year.

This is Disney folks, this movie is going to be re-re-re-released many times.
