This is not true at all. I've had a Canary since day 1, and while there were some flaky issues at the get go it has no problems recovering from a power failure, internet cutout, or otherwise. The firmware automatically updates to fix any bugs and while the Android app was pretty awful out of the gate, the current apps for both Android and iOS work great.

The free storage plan gets you only 12 hours of footage, but if you compare the plans vs Nest/Dropcam and similar systems it's about 1:1 cost wise. I have the 2 day plan, even when traveling I'm never out of pocket for more than about 24 hours so if anything does happen that gives you enough time to grab the video you need.

The design is also much more elegant and subtle in that most people don't realize it's a camera. I leave mine sitting next to the coffee maker and virtually no one realizes what it is. That's a pretty important thing to keep in mind if someone is breaking into your house and sees it. The overall video quality is also great and unlike the Nest it doesn't require a separate thermostat to tell you the air temp/humidity/air quality. Which is very useful if you're away and realize that you left your cat sitter turned your heat off and forgot to turn it back on, so your house is suddenly down to 50 degrees and your cat is very angry (true story).

Beware, I'm not a huge fan of the Canary. Very buggy auto on/off, if you lost internet it doesnt reconnect on it's own.

I do not own one, but I have read this before. Debating whether or not to pull trigger.

Canary in general is great. It's a good "nest" competitor and good for the avg. joe to get setup in their house / small office. That being said, you get to worry about the usual stuff (who else has access to these cams?) and also compare against getting a cheap cam off Amazon/eBay and linking it to your own cloud (Amazon/dropbox/etc.) which I would typically suggest for someone with some technical know-how.

The main thing that irks me about Canary and all the "IOT" is they have already back-peddled on their promise of free cloud storage from their initial indiegogo. Taking it from 7-days to 24hours which is where we are at now. We have consistently seen this with Nest/Canary/other IOT providers falling short of their promises and leaving us customers in the dust. To that regard, building your own solution will always be the best until the tech develops further.

There are lots of multi-room IP camera solutions available. Solutions like Canary/Nest are really designed for the "I live in an apartment and don't want to spend time running cat5 cable through the house". It works over Wifi, streams everything to an app, so all you need is to plug in the power, launch the app and you're done.

If you live in a house, then you probably would want to make a longer term investment that protects your entire property. In my case, I live in a 2 bedroom apartment where the Canary can see both entrances and the main rooms that connect the bedrooms, so anyone who did show up would likely be walking past the camera unless they broke into 1 room then left from the same room (But thieves tend to operate on greed).

More importantly it serves as a great piece of mind when we are out of the house, knowing that the cat gets fed on time, the lights/heat weren't left on/off, and that everything else is generally OK.
