*** please be sure to purchase via desktop/laptop and NOT via mobile devices (tablet, phone..). ***

deal [dell.com]

I would consider upgrading cpu's as it's very very cheap and downgrading to 500gb hd instead of 1tb to save $120+

in cart apply coupon codes SAVE35 (35% off) & SERVER$100 (extra $100 off) - $100 slickdeals rebate [4myrebate.com] = $411 + free shipping (for config below)

Specs:
  • Intel Xeon E3-1220 CPU (very much worth upgrading)
  • 8GB DDR4 ECC
  • 500GB 7.2k RPM SATA 6Gbps Hard Drive (downgrade to)
  • DVDROM
  • NO OS
  • Rest config I left default but feel free to upgrade to your desire
This rebate will need signed rebate form, copy of invoice with tracer sku's SKU 370-ACIN and 370-AAIP. No UPC cutout required. I prefer to circle mine to make it cheaper to the rebate processing team. Please refer to our blog post & attached pdf for the rest of the details

For home use I nabbed a SMC X8DTN+ in a 2U/12-bay case for $320 on ebay with 24GB of RAM and 2x Xeon L5630 -- dropped an IBM M1015 into it for another $75 and it's serving VMs like a champ, including FreeNAS with a 24TB array. It's probably more than you would need, but if you have already been thinking about resurrecting a datacenter pull, it's a pretty easy situation to live with.

How loud is the SMC X8DTN+? I am also curious about power usage. I am looking to use something like this as a freenas only backup.

I usually run around ~240W with 8 consumer-grade magnetic SATA drives active. If you're building specifically for FreeNAS the CPU is more than you would need but you might consider your RAM footprint for ARC.

Most of the noise is the chassis itself -- particularly with the L-series Xeons and not filling all the drive trays it's overkill, but it's hidden away in a closet so it only bothers me if I take a phone call in that room.

No OS.

Have converted a few older laptops to Deepin OS this week. It's a linux distro that looks like OSX.

Intuitive software and runs fast.

Not to sure about server OS -but nice to play around with. (32 /64 bit versions)
