Thread Details

I was at the mall and walked by one of those AT&T kiosks. One of the employees mentioned that they were having a special on the iPhone SE GoPhone, Save $200 with the pre-payment of one month's service. The cheapest GoPhone plan was $45.

I'm actually on AT&T post-paid so the employee advised me to buy the phone and one month's service for $245+taxes and then put my post-paid SIM in the iPhone SE. She assured me that that the device would work fine on my post-paid plan and I would not be charged a cancellation or recurring fee of any kind for the GoPhone pre-paid plan.

I asked for a flyer or advertisement but she said it was an unadvertised promotion. She told me she wasn't sure how long the promotion would last but she would guess through the 15th. I wasn't currently looking to buy one but thought it was a good deal worth sharing. YMMV as it was an AT&T mall kiosk and I know that they may run somewhat independent of AT&T as a whole. I also couldn't find anything about it on AT&T's website, Google or Slickdeals. Hopefully it wasn't a store specific offer, I'll try and ask for the scope next time I'm there.
If you purchase something through a post on our site, Slickdeals may get a small share of the sale.

Could be a good deal but unlocking this phone after the first month may not be feasible... That kinda kills the deal!

Thanks
Max

What is the AT&T unlock trick?
Google AT&T device unlock request...click on the at&t wireless consumer device unlock request link (the first result I believe), accept the terms, choose non-at&t customer, enter your name, device IMEI, your email address etc, and then after submitting they send you a confirmation email.

Login to your email, confirm the unlock request, and nearly every time they'll send you an unlock code within a couple days. Do not turn on the gophone before unlocking...wait for the unlock code to arrive, then power it up with a different carrier's sim in it, unlock it, and you're done, and your device is instantly worth nearly double what it cost (in most cases).

Could this potentially work for Tmobile?

So I'm assuming the price was $200 for the 16gb? Did they mention $300 for 64gb? Thanks

If you can get it unlocked yes...however if the $200 price requires purchase of a month's service and immediate activation, using they non-at&t customer device unlock "trick" I just mentioned above almost certainly won't work since it's now registered with AT&T prepaid. You'd probably have to fulfill their terms of unlocking eligibility at that point to get it unlocked, to get it to work on T-Mobile.

Thanks for the info.

I am assuming that this is for the 16GB version which would kind of kill it for me. If anybody goes to ATT please check on the 64gb for eligibility.

Almost certain that wouldn't work in this scenario though. With these prepaid plans (which is what this most likely is), you have to fulfill the terms of the agreement before you can request the unlock code. Wouldn't be the first time a sales person was talking out of their ass.

Sounds like a good deal for someone on Cricket, but keeping the phone means back to the issue of only having 16GB of storage space. And the price is $245 plus tax, not $199. That's around $270 for basically an iPhone 5S juiced up. 32GB "good" iPhone 5S' are going for $190 on Swappa as a comparison for something with more storage and the same size, but slower processor.
