It's for the browning feature so it doesn't splatter all over. For the browning feature your not supposed to seal it and leave the lid off. This gives you an open see lid that sits on top so the splatter hits it instead. Reviews on Amazon people love it, but I could do without it.

I originally thought it would work under pressure, but doesn't.

And slow cook feature too.

Now that you mention it, I already have a lid just like that from a 6qt pot. It fits just fine on my Instant Pot.

It works well for the slow cook feature, or to store things in the fridge. I wouldn't use it to stop spattering, since you'd also be sealing in steam which will prevent things from browning well.
