How well does follow me and return to home perform compared to the Phantom 3?

I have both a Phantom 3 advanced and this quad. The follow me works fairly well with the hubsan...it actually just follows the controller (which has a GPS connection too). If you move the sticks, it takes it out of follow me mode. RTH works fine assuming you had good GPS lock before takeoff. Check out Quadcopter101 review on youtube.

This quad is a bit sportier than the phantom 3, and is a decent AIW solution (the screen is in the transmitter).

Technically, yes... but it really depends on where you plan to use it.

I'm slowly getting into drones. I bought a cheap Syma x5C for $20 and a tiny toy drone from that deal two weeks back. Even my girlfriend is having a blast flying these things.

We want to make the step up to high-end consumer grade drones like the Phantom and turn this into a real hobby. Would the Hubsan be a good intermediate before going 'pro'? Or should we just hold out for a good deal on a Phantom?

BE WARNED!! This quad has many firmware problems that hasn't been fixed by Hubsan. I have had this and returned it within a day. In my experience it was very erratic and unpredictable. Don't just take it from me, read the H501S forum on RCGroups. Tons of complaints, crashes, and fly aways.
