SERIOUS QUESTION! Can a dog throw up diarrhea?

Jason_of_Texas 1,907 126 July 31, 2008 at 01:56 PM
This is a serious question,not a truth or dare, a real question. My dog just vomited what looks and smells like diarrhea. I just saw her do it twice and it is alot,not like she ate some and threw it up,but like actual diarrhea coming out. I know its a sick question,but anyone know? I am trying to google it with no answer coming up.
My vet is on a cruise until next week,should I take her to another one?She seems fine energy wise,been playing with my other dog all day,I was gone for a bit so I can't say she didn't eat anything odd.

When you should call your veterinarian

Vomiting:

* blood in vomit
* vomiting accompanied by diarrhea
* vomit looks and smells like stool
* vomiting is projectile
* vomiting is sporadic and there is no relationship to meals
* multiple bouts of vomiting occur over a short period of time
* ingestion of a poison (like antifreeze or fertilizer) is suspected
* vomiting persists more than a day or two
* stomach bloating occurs or your dog tries to vomit but can not
* dog also appears listless
* there is weight loss
* dog is showing other signs of illness such as labored breathing or pain

Ohhhhh... yikes. I do know that dogs sometimes have issues with their anal glands getting clogged or somesuch. It basically makes it so they can't crap. Have you noticed your dog taking a dump lately?

The links I am finding state that if it's not a case of "your dog eating its own poo" then it's could be serious (intestinal blockage) and get to a vet quickly.

Ah,guess I need to find a vet. Usually I take them for walks and I have a chance to notice what thier stool looks like,but this week I have just been letting them in the backyard so I can't say for sure. She seems fine,she is playing right now with my other dog,but she threw up alot,and it was brown mustardy color and it smelled.

Did it smell like poop or just nasty? Dog poop has a distinct smell.nod

Was it a lot or a little?

Smelled like dog poo,when I got back to the shop there was some diara in the back,which is odd b/c the dogs never do that.They are pretty well trained.The one who is sick has been known to eat a turd nugget a time or two,so I wouldn't put it past her to eat some,but she threw up twice and it was a pretty good amount of liquid coming out.

Um, no. Impacted Anal Glands cannot cause vomiting. They can cause butt scooting or an Anal Glad Abscess which makes a bowel movement so painful they don't want to go #2.

Dogs (like people) can't throw-up contents in their Large Intestines (where feces is made & gets ready to go out the colon), unless they have ingested feces to begin with, or there is a blockage in the colon (large intestine) that is so severe & has been there for a long amount of time.
I'm thinking that your dog ate feces and is now throwing it up (I've see that at work).

Keep an eye on your dog, don't feed it anything for 6 - 8 hours in order to give the stomach some time to rest. Then if your dog stops vomiting in that time, start introducing small amounts of bland food (rice, boiled unseasoned chicken or hamburger meat, canned baby food, yogurt, etc.). If the vomiting starts again after eating, seek medical help asap!
