I'm using this, got the same variant at same price some 3 months ago from Dell .. swapped hd to ssd and upgraded ram to 8gb .. Using as main desktop and I play a lot of Dota 2, runs at ultra setting with 60+ fps and 4xAA without lag .. The wifi card on the i3 variant is not as good thou, might need to swap that out if you download a lot of stuff (torrents etc) .. Everything on this is customizable except the graphic card (processor, ram, hd, wifi module) .. Runs kodi at 4K too but that many 40$ android boxes can do .. It's a Sweet little all round pc .. Can be used for anything ..

One small gripe is no 3.5 mm audio out, only optical , as it's designed to be hooked up to a tv ..
Good price, but dell has just refreshed the alpha with skylake and other graphic options.
not that I'm interested in this deal even remotely, but comments like yours are just useless. link to better deals or don't say anything at all

That's an awesome price. I got the Alpha around Christmas and $400 used, like new though, was the cheapest I could find it.

The base model I think still has the same processor/specs. They only updated the i5/i7 models with skylake

No, there's an i3 new alpha but, it's $599 with an AMD m470x base card. If you upgrade now though it's a full 960 not the mobile version and is now compatible with the graphics accelerator. Someone not looking for cheapest might be bettor off with one of those. This is still every bit worth it for $399, but I'm thinking they might be selling off the haswell chips cheaper if you wait.

Edit: wait, I'm seeing the steam machine isn't being offered with the i3, but you're getting the windows license on the alpha... I keep forgetting they offer the steam version for absolutely no savings as a different product.

I was looking for something with a small profile that could output 4k on my TV. I checked out the mac mini's but it seems that even the latest ones can only do 4k at 30fps. I basically want something that I can hookup my NAS and TV to and play media plus the occasional game.

I'm not very familiar with the Steam OS. If i wanted to run hyperspin and other non-steam PC games would I need to install winOS?

Can you comfortably play games like Witcher 3 and Fallout 4 on decently high settings on this machine?

Also, can you install Windows as a dual boot with Steam OS on this?

Thanks!

My plan was to ditch the steam OS and install windows. So this model basically falls in between the old 4130T alpha and the new 6100T alpha but is still being sold by dell for $499.99 vs 299.99. GPU comparison [game-debate.com] I think go in favor of the 860M on the older model. Graphics accelerator might be a concern for people buying it solely for gaming. I intend to use it as a media device for my 4k tv

Don't know about the games but I saw a few youtube videos showing that it can be setup as a dual boot.

Did you reinstall SteamOS on it or Windows? Is SteamOS a pain to install? I'm hoping that the SteamOS base install has everything you need (no extra Dell/Alienware modifications)

I do that occassionally, hook it to my 4k tv for watching 4k 60 fps action movie trailers on youtube, it plays fine. The WiFi module isn't one of the better AC ones out there, so that may be the bottleneck depending on your network.

I'll be connecting it via ethernet so that shouldn't be a problem, but thank you for confirming that it is capable of 4k @ 60fps!
