That's a very good question. I had wondered the same thing, but have since owned both a N5X and currently use a Z3.

I bought the N5X, but was not happy with it for a few reasons.
Bad battery life
Built in hotspot checks with carrier support (ie blocked natively)
Serious camera lag issues
No SD Card
Poor value, not worth the $400 I paid for it new

I passed this phone off to my wife, who is not a power user, and bought the Z3 based on SD recommendations when this phone was $250 maybe 6 months ago and LOVE IT.

It has:

Great battery life - I get through the whole day without charging
Waterproof
SD card
Runs 6.0.1 (So current enough)
My hotspot works! (I'm on cricket - anyone who's carrier requires a paid tethering plan, this phone's tethering should be able to bypass that)
Magnetic charger which is nice with a charging dock - set it and forget it. No need to unplug the cover that's over the charging port, making it waterproof.
No lag, just an overall smooth phone.

So even if the two were the same price, I'd still buy the Z3. Yes, I know the Z3 is a few years older, but performance gains in the last two years are marginal and certainly not obvious on the N5X vs Z3. If anything, I'd say the N5X was a step backwards. I hope this is helpful.
FYI, Xperia Z3 runs 6.1.

Why would people buy such phones when Google nexus gives guaranteed updates? Which not only safeguards from security perspective but also tons of new features? Is it due to cost?

Wondering the same thing myself. These Sony phones are not a good deal. It can't be cost because the Nexus 5X is 240 right now. So why pay more for this old a** Sony phone running kit kat. Maybe the ps4 play or waterproofing?

I have this phone(the Z3). PS4 remote play works well and you can even connect a dualshock 4 to it so you don't have the on screen controls. Overall I like the phone a lot, however, this isn't a good deal. I bought mine new on eBay for $180 almost a year ago. and it's the 32 GB model. You can get a higher rated phone for cheaper these days. even if you really like all the Sony functionality, you can find this phone for cheaper.

i bought a z3+ from amazon when my s6 edge cracked. what a horrible phone it was no where near any flagships. totally dissapointed as on paper the specs looked really good. it was the perfect specs for me dual sim, sd 810, 3gb ram, 3000 mah battery, 5.2 inch 1080p, micro sd slot, 20 mpx camera but the screen looked really washed out was not bright enough, both cameras were super crappy water color effect, battery life was ok, no heating from sd 810, but the display and camera alone made me feel that i dont want to waste $350 on this device so i ended up returning it. you can check out the c4 at bestbuy will give you how bad the acreen is. camera you cant test but if you look up reviews on c4/m4 etc every review mentions that the camera is crappy.

from my experience the lg g3, s5 was way better. heck the s4 and g2 was better than the z3+ or z4.

Key words being your experience. My experience with an Xperia Z was great. That was probably my favorite phone of all time. Not saying the the Z3 would equal it but everybody's experience is different.

Sony needs to stick with the Walkman. Leave mobile phones to others.
