Polaroid iu is really slow. It takes forever to load their apps. Not recommended.

How slow are we talking and what phone or tablet are you using?

This is the original cube, not the plus, so the phone/tablet apps do not work with this version. The "app" that is loaded on the actual cam that launches in win/osx when plugged in via USB is basic and lightweight, just for settings, etc. Best way to use the first gen cube is to just pull the microSD out and use an SD adapter or card reader and load the files via that - it's faster.

FWIW, I owned a first gen cube, and absolutely loved it, and recently sold it and upgraded to the plus, and I love it as well. They're fun little cams - the video quality of the plus is much better, but the original was decent enough (not gopro top-of-the-line quality, but on par with say, gen 2 of gopro), and I enjoy the app for at least some control, even if it isn't the most slick UX/UI or wireless integration out there. And both, IMO, are better than the Gopro Session. The accessories are cheaper, the magnet is so awesome, and it's smaller. Pop this into the relatively cheap underwater housing with a selfie stick/monopod, and it's a cool little vacation/beach cam that is small, fun, and very kid friendly. And if it gets busted or lost, it was only $65. Any questions? Ask! I've messed with these a fair bit.

Also, it's decent for spot usage as a dashcam - small form factor and wide field of view.

Thanks for this information. A few questions:

What do you feel are it's major negative points/what ultimately made you decide to upgrade?

Any thoughts on this versus the other budget cams like the Mobius Action Cam, Counter Roam2 or Roam3, Xiaomi Yi, or SJCAM M10?

I want to get it but it's stupidly restricted to Apple mov. file, which is VERY limited to play on any player. Probably Apple paid Polaroid to keep it exclusive.

Yes, you can try to convert but you shouldn't have to waste your time doing that.

My apologies that I didn't see this earlier - but I'll respond so the info is here and I have a sneaking suspicion that this is going to go back on sale for Prime Day...

My main reason for upgrading was so I can use it with my toddler and run it from my phone. If you're using it as a pure action cam for a day out and aren't looking to post stuff IMMEDIATELY to social media, then the non-plus should be fine. One thing - if you have the original (non-plus) version, and you're running an android phone with a microSD slot, you can have the output pretty quickly, just not on an iPhone. The plus does have better low-light performance, and image stabilization as well.

Out of the other cameras you mentioned, I've only seen the Yi and an SJCam that were comparable (not the M10 model) at the time (over a year ago), and they were both pretty good, marginally lesser image quality than the similar GoPro model, but a much better $ value. I don't have any experience with the other two.

Perhaps I'm having a different experience - what's so restricting about it? MOV plays natively on MacOS, Win10, VLC is fast and free, and it's worked with every editing software I've tried (Cyberlink, AVID (free), Adobe Premiere elements and Pro, Final Cut, iMovie, etc.).

Not trying to naysay you or defend their usage, just wondering.

I totally understand. I'm lived more with AVI and MPG file and use Klite Codecs + media player for my viewing needs. I really can't remember why looking back but I remember having a hard time using MOV files and/or requiring Quicktime player back then.

I want to use VLC more but I always default to Klite so force of habit I suppose. Genuinely wasn't aware that VLC could play MOV files and I don't put money on converters or couldn't find good free converters; maybe times have changed / wasn't aware.

Sorry if it sounded like a sudden raging outburst, that was really the first thing I typed and posted remember MOV file back then. Roll Eyes (Sarcastic)

you should switch away from using codec packs.

use vlc or mpc-hc.
and then individually install any codecs that you need.

So, if I stuck this on the hood of my car with the magnet would it fly off or would I need a different mount?
