I second the Giant bikes! I happen to be shopping for hybrids for myself and the gf so we debated whether to buy online or a local bike shop. Definitely go to a LBS; they outfitted us with a Escape 2 for myself and an Alight 3 for her. Our LBS took the time to fit us to our bikes, threw in free kick stands, we got to ride a ton of other bikes before falling in love with the Giant bikes. When buying online, you got to worry about assembling the bike, the looks of the bike (it matters!) and whether you are comfortable riding it.

We then slapped on phone mounts, downloaded the Pokemon Red/Blue Bicycle theme song and went PoGo'ing all over town. We turned heads wherever we went. Whether it was our awesome bikes doing that or the nerdiness of the two of us stopping and flicking at our phones every half-block, I don't care; we're a happy couple Smilie

Good deal. I'm somewhat in the market for a hybrid/commuter bike that is lightweight (maybe 20-25 lbs). This thing weighs over 40 lbs so it wouldn't be much of an upgrade from my several-year-old Diamondback Wildwood Citi.

Not sure what you're expecting from a $180 bike. This is much more what you're looking for:

Thanks. So basically I have to spend $300+ for a lightweight bike?

Or go used? Do you care for reliability? You can probably find something between these two weights (23-40lbs) for less than $300, but it may not last.

The Giant Escape 3 [giant-bicycles.com] might be more what you're looking for. At $360 it's a quality bike at a decent price and much less than 40lbs.

Nashbar flat bar road bike [nashbar.com]. It sales for about $220 before tax now and then, I got one just a month ago for $238 shipped. About 26.8 pounds based on my weight carrying it vs my weight alone on the body scale. Doesn't come with rack though.

I don't know whether to be supportive for you and the gf buying bikes and actually using them or horrified that Pokemon and Bicycle got used in the same sentence.

So...yes, Giant makes good bikes. They're a HUGE manufacturer and do manufacturer bicycles for other brands and/or have in the past ::cough:: Specialized. Even a lower end bike from an LBS will be far better than this one. Or, go used if you know what to look for and a well maintained 10 year old bike with decent components will land you in the mid 20lb range.

Props to you sir, here's a moon stone. Try not to evolve something silly like a Clefairy.
