These are similar to this which do have reviews, but the Op one is toned down with less features

Can't you just do this with a free app?

yes.

but I assume this dedicated device has a much better antenna and battery life compared to a smartphone. Also should be more durable.
But without reviews it's hard to know.

After reading the Amazon reviews, it's hard to tell exactly what the use case for this really is. It directs you back to a start point and keeps location and temperature data along your trek for review on your computer. Was hoping this might be a cheap dedicated geocaching unit but it doesn't look anywhere capable enough.

I bought something like this at the Bushnell factory outlet when I was in Misery...Missouri a few years ago. It's pretty much worthless. It can record your track and you can set waypoints along the way, but it doesn't have the ability to show you anything on a map. Pretty much what you're seeing on the screen (a directional arrow) is all you get.

I ended up selling it on eBay just to get rid of it. Totally worthless.

Purely for off-trail hiking only.

I'm guessing this would be OK for geotagging photos. Does anyone know how much memory there is to store tracks? If I could clip it to my camera bag and store a week's worth of location data, I'd be interested. that said, any idea on battery life?
