Not a specific comment on this desk, but I bought a cheap Walmart desk in college about 4 years ago. I still remember being shocked when I took it out of the box and found out that the cardboard packaging weighed more than the desk itself. I wouldn't recommend Walmart desks in general after my experience with that one.

A desk made of MDF panels is unlikely to weigh less than the packaging is comes with. A desk made of solid wood, can potentially achieve that. I understand you indicate that the desk you bought was too cheaply made, but being light in general can be a good thing, IMO.

MDF is often heavier than wood of the same dimensions (depending on the wood) I understand that there are times when more weight indicates better quality, but other times it does not. Bicycles, tennis rackets, running shoes, tripods, automobiles... etc... I've had many desks over the years, and some of them have been crappy and heavy, others have been nice and heavy... Some have been nice and light, others have been crappy and light... My point is that I haven't seen any correlation to weight and quality when it comes to desks, especially small desks that are likely meant to be in dorms, where weight would be a detriment because they would like be moved often.

If it was a fairly thick wood-look top, it was likely a hardboard hollow-core desk top. Built similarly to hollow-core interior doors. Ikea has a habit of building desktops from that stuff. Any of these cheap desks aren't built to hold any substantial weight (like a person sitting on them, for instance) but they are usually fine for a few years of college as long as they aren't abused.

I don't see this being particularly slick, however. I have bought a new desk with full hutch, filing cabinet, and many shelves for around this price. If you are looking for a desk for college, hit up craigslist. I have purchased a few decent desks on there for under $50... Probably closer to $20 or $30 for something like this.

It's not a "Wal-Mart desk" though... It's a brand that is sold elsewhere as well. Your comment is as relevant as someone recommending not buying a box of Twinkies because you had a bad store brand sponge cake.

I feel stupid for asking, but what does the USB hub do? Connect to your computer somehow?
