Not only a slightly better deal than the walmart / amazon black version (HT-900), these are newer (HT-904) and actually better than the HT-900. These have better, heavier motor and are much more powerful than the HT-900.

Have you ACTUALLY owned both of them, and compared them side by side? I HAVE.

EDIT: I bought both the white and the black version from target. I noticed that the target box says HT-904-TGT for the white one, but HT-900 for the black. Not sure if that means anything. May be the back ones I bought were from older/newer stock than the white ones, I don't know. What I do know is, I bought both colors, and once i realized the black ones weren't as powerful, I checked the motor assembly and they were different - size, as well as the mounting. The black ones felt lighter, and I weighed both, and sure enough there was a difference.

May be they use the same motors now.

Ok, I will put the white vs black controversy to rest. I went to target to take pictures of the black motor assembly and mounting points, as well as electronics label, so I could compare the two. I am posting the info, and YOU make the call if they are different.

First, the pictures of the motor assembly and the mount. Compare the two. The stack of metal plates on the white motor is way thicker (look at how much it sticks out from the mounting point) than the black one.

Secondly, the motor parts # (sticker on the motor)
For white: ESPL HT-900B
For black: MHD-5513-900

And third, the label (on the black, it's molded in the plastic, on white it's a sticker, both underside of the stand)

For white:
Model: HT904TGD1
120V AC, 60Hz, 0.6A

For black:
Model: HT900TGD1
120V AC, 60Hz, 0.25A

Take a look at the HUGE difference in the amp rating, 0.6A vs 0.25A, that's a 72W (white) vs 30W (black) rating.
For comparison, I have two stand fans and their motors are rated at .45A and .375A @120V 60Hz.

You make the conclusion.
Shipping weight at Amazon is 3.2 lbs for the HT-900 and 3.7 lbs for the HT-904. The weight assessment by the OP is correct, possibly due to different motors.

I love these ones. I got rid of all the stand fans in my house, and bought 3 of these just about a month ago. Initially I bought 1 white (HT-904) and 2 black (HT-900) and realized the white ones have a beefier/powerful motor than the black ones, and replaced the black ones with white.

We use a couple of box fans just to move the air around and also for the white noise at night. It works well, but I'm gonna get a couple of these and put one in kids room for same purpose and have a back up. I'm sure they will be very helpful in this miserable Midwest humid weather

The only difference between the 900 and the 904 is the color.

I wanted to get one of these for winter actually, my radiators in the living room seem to push the heat up straight behind the curtains, and I was hoping to use a fan to push the heat around the room. Do you think this is workable for that purpose. This doesn't seem too big either, I was thinking about putting this high up somewhere, pointing down since all that heat goes up and stays up on my 9' ceilings.

Hope these are better than the ones I hit a few years ago - those make a lot of noise (even on low) and don't move as much air as the Vornados do.

I haven't tried the vornados, but I didn't expect much from these cheap tiny fans, but i was surprised.

I'm thinking you could do as well just pushing air from the floor up at the ceiling in the middle of the room... thus starting an up at the middle.. down along the walls air flow.. but your way sounds good too...

Does target allow you to test the unit when you pick it up?
