Not bad if you don't mind paying the ~$150 premium for the smaller size and don't want to build your own ITX setup.

how about a sd rebate for a non-gaming desktop? Need a new desktop but don't need that graphics card...

I'll be waiting for the 1060 to be in the Alpha before I get one. Still pretty sweet that you can now add the amplifier support. I have a 980ti in my amplifier and it works like a charm.

Should note this is a R2. The original only has notebook GPU. This release has full desktop GPU -big different.

I have a first gen Alpha that I recently purchased from Dell Outlet.
They are nice little systems, but desperately need SSD's in them to run quicker.

I put in the Crucial MX300 750gb.
I now boot directly into AlphaUI console mode in 10-12 seconds.
That is with the i3 as well.

Just wish they had a path to upgrade the Video, but I'll cross that bridge when i see Gen 2s in the outlet center for a decent price.

Went through Pc Parts picker to try to build a comparable system since that's the big reason this system is getting TD'ed so much and there's always such negativity around these.

I suppose the case and power supply, I could've found something for less than the $90 combined. I chose that MB as it appears to come with bluetooth and wifi. You can get cheaper if you drop that but then you're not comparing like with like.

The graphics amplifier is on sale for $137 right now on amazon.

I don't see how they didn't include the 1060 in these. Thing would have been killer. Still a decent system but the price has got to come down a bit

These Alphas always stay about a year behind on GPU specs. Last year they were still running 860's.

Not a terrible deal, but I was able to get a ROG GL52 for $680. Better specs and still functions as a laptop. 960M may be a git slower, but the 6700 i7 is definitely faster.

the amplifier would be sooo much sweeter if it wasnt a proprietary connection and used something like thunderbolt or whatever instead

since these new ones now fit a smaller full size graphics card, whats the point of even having the amplifier?

I have an i5 first gen, added in a 512gb SSD and it runs like a champ (boot is less than 5 seconds). I wish it had the graphic amplifier port too, then I wouldn't have bought a new computer last week to get a GTX 1070. Sigh.

But for those of you on the fence - this thing is ridiculously small, very quiet, quick (especially with super easy SSD swap), and this version of the Alpha has the Amplifier port which extends its useful life by quite a bit... since most games will be GPU dependent and the i5 in this will be capable enough for a while.

Because it'll be much easier to fit a modern full size video card into the amplifier than trying to figure out how to get it into the Alpha when you want to upgrade.

When this was released a few months ago the 960 was what was available. I imagine they will put the 1050 in there when it becomes available, but then again, the pricing on pascal mobile is insanely high right now so I would not be surprised if they waited a while before upgrading the GPU.

For this to get the 1060 it would have to have the cooling necessary for a 970m. Seeing as the old one was a 960m I doubt the 1060 would fit the bill for power and cooling. Again, I could be wrong and I really hope the 1060 could make it in here, but again... not holding my breath.

Like others, I can't wait for this to hit the outlet. I really want to replace my x51r3 with an i7 alpha that can travel with me.

My problem with the amplifier is it's huge. It's a cool idea, but it also defeats the entire purpose of the Alpha.
