I would think that this deal should be getting more attention. Too many monitors in the basement now (I tell her that they are spares...) to get away with getting another.

It's my first time to buy a monitor as I have been a laptop user for more than 10 years and I have no idea to tell which model is better than the other. Can anyone tell me which monitor has the best specs/value for the price? I am planning to connect it to my 6-year old 14" 720p laptop on my dining table. Any information will be greatly appreciated.

If it's 6 years old and lacks a DVI/HDMI out, just get the cheapest option. The 24" will do nicely since you're stuck with analog out on VGA.

    Not claiming a pro myself.
The 25 & 27 inch are IPS monitors, they are sharper in color and have wider viewing angle. The other consideration is cable connections. Many new electronics have HDMI connections but not sure if your laptop does. Older laptop should have VGA connections (sometimes called D-Sub). All listed monitors have both HDMI and VGA.

I don't really follow the price of monitors. Others can jump in about how good the price is.

    Thanks guys for the input.

Yes, my laptop has an HDMI output. So if I play my 1080 video on my 720 laptop connected to this monitor, the monitor output will be 1080, correct?

Yes it will. If you use Windows, it is easy to set it in extend mode or external only mode, and it will use 1080p. If you use duplicate mode it will only be 720p.

I've been leaning towards the HP 27XW, but I've realized it was sold brand new for $119 at Amazon last December 19, 2015 while the refurbished one at eBay is $124.99. So this does not seem to be a hot deal at all. Nonetheless, I appreciate your input guys. Now I know what to look out for in the future.

The price from last year was likely a model clearance. It's not often you see a name brand 27" new IPS monitor go so cheap. I would say the cheapest expected price for a new 27" is around $150 or so.
