No hard drive this is a bare-bone server. gives you the structure and you make it what you want.

Its a modern-day Dell PowerEdge 400sc. Someone please, if there are any true cheap bastards among us... acknowledge you understand my ~12-year-old reference.

This really is a fantastic deal. I've been planning a mini (ITX) home server build that comes to almost exactly this price point...although I'm doing it with Skylake and 8gb RAM. This deal gets you a very quiet, nice case, proven compatible and reliable components, and a lot of expansion capability. The downsides are that this case is big (compared to ITX) and it has a previous gen processor and socket.

I'm still going with my own build. But this is very tempting. It's probably a better choice...if I could stand the bigger size.

Edit: the passmark on this processor [cpubenchmark.net] is 4880. For plex, that should get you two simultaneous transcoding streams, I believe.

What is server about it with an i3 and no Xeon? The other server deals are great because of the Server grade CPU/Mobo.

Home/small business server grade mobo, case, component compatibility with many hypervisors, etc. Pop in a Xeon if you want. Edit: Not sure about Xeon compatibility.

If you want more CPU (i5-4570) and more RAM (8GB) and don't mind used, I really like the off lease Lenovo E32 that's been showing up on eBay lately. like this http://r.ebay.com/Mi82fM

I bought 5 from a different seller for $175 ea.

No ECC support with i5, if that's important to you

Have one of these running as mythtv backend server for nearly 2 years. If I remember correctly it loafs along somewhere between 18 and 24 watts. As close to silent as you can get too.

funnily enough.......
mine has been serving duty for the past 3 years as my
-dhcp server
-dns server
-proxy server
-firewall
-traffic router
-domain controller
-web server
-ftp server
-mail server
-mysql database server
-file server
-media server (Emby, the old Mediabrowser)
-zwave server/controller

i know, crazy a non-server can do all that servering...
