Online clearance item at Home Depot. 96 inch long workbench with stainless steel or bamboo top. Good reviews.

http://www.homedepot.com/p/NewAge.../205902924

Also available at Amazon for $209.99 with no tax and free shipping. Should be cheaper overall and you don't have to worry about pickup.

old solid wood doors work well for bench tops..i've always just built work benches out of 2x4s and use 3/4 plywood for the top...seem plenty solid and cheap.

I don't buy a tool for looks. Particle board or plywood is a great surface to work on top of and easily replaceable 10 years down the road when it's too gouged up. Sometimes, I also prefer a steel surface when I'm working on oily assemblies so having the option for both is a bonus.

If you are doing something like tearing down a lawnmower engine, rehabbing brake parts (anything with a fluid), you DO NOT want a wood top. Not a permanent one, anyway. Something you can spray down with brake cleaner and wipe up (i.e. metal) is a huge advantage in that case, so putting a sheet of plywood over a metal table is a pretty standard thing for people that do auto or mechanical repair.

It's been this price at Amazon and Wayfair for weeks. I think Sears had it at this price too.

I've had this same bench in bamboo for about a year. Has held up pretty well. A little more wobbly than I'd like, but for this price it seems like a great deal.

Link to Amazon. Couple bucks more ($209.99) but free shipping. No tax as seller is Wayfair. Ends up being cheaper this way and you don't have to worry about pickup.

I'd go for the stainless top and then buy a sheet of particle board if you thought you needed a "wood" top down the road.
