the ad mentions a 29 gallon tank, which as far as I can tell is rare to find for $1 per. nice deal if so, I wish I hadn't bought a used 29gallon recently and waited then

What's special about 29, instead of 30? Otherwise it is not a deal at all. My local Petco has this price 24/7 all year around.

The website says 10, 20 (long and high), 29, 40 and 55 gallon tanks are available. The email I received and my reef forum even has users reporting 75 gallon tanks as part of the sale. YMMV!

I also received a $15 off $75 purchase coupon, pdf attached. Use it with a tank and some accessories!

It's been like this for a while at Petsmart for the 10, 20 and 40 gallon tanks just not advertised as a $1 per gal deal. I bought the 10 gal last month for $10 and picked up in store.

So it's just the tank, does not include the hood or the light, right?
How much better is this than buying one of those starter kits? I am not familiar with the costs, but I would assume those starter kits come with the most basic contents when it comes to pebbles, filters, lights, heaters, thermometers, hoses, etc..

I don't want to get anything big and I don't want to spend too much money, just a nice touch, addition to our home. So 10 or 20 gallon, I assume 20 is the best since it's perfect size, not too big not too small, easier to clean than 30+ gallons.

$20 + Hood + Light + Filter + Gravel + Heater + Hoses for Air bubbles + Thermostat + Fish Food + etc..

I cannot find fish tanks prices or tank kits on Petco, I guess they purposely don't list those on website. Same thing with Petland discounts.

I found some on amazon:
https://www.amazon.com/Marina-LED...B0173I55JM

$65 for 10-Gallon, $100 for 20-Gallon.

What do you guys think?
Thanks in advance.

It really depends on your needs. If you're into freshwater then one of those kits MIGHT be for you. I would think you would be better off if you buy the tank new (especially at $1/gal) and get the rest of the equipment used on Craigslist. Obviously that depends on if there's a good amount of equipment available in your area, but still. People get in and out of this hobby so often that you'll usually find perfectly good equipment online for a small fraction of what it costs new.

If you're looking at saltwater, these kits are pretty worthless. Even for the most rudimentary FO systems, I don't think I'd go with a kit for a marine setup.

Thanks, I am just looking into getting some fish with some nice relaxing thing to look at, and for my son to have the responsibility of feeding the fish, etc. So nothing special, just some nice looking fish at the corner of our room.

My only concern is the filtration system, I don't know what it was but back in the day when I had my fishtank, we had some kind of filteration with 3 stages (carbon, coal, etc.. ) and it worked wonderful, we didn't have to clean the tank for a very long time and when we had to, it was just a wipe of the interior and emptying only half way and refilling it. Before that I remember some of our tanks turning green within less than a month. I don't know if it was the wrong lightbulb, too much food, or the type of fish.. I don't want to live through those again. Smilie

With craigslist, it's a hit or miss, and since I can't really tell if I am getting a good deal or not, I rather buy new, unless I am shooting for a specific filter/equipment and it costs a lot new. I looked at CL, there are 20-30gallon fish tanks for $50-$75, so obviously this fish tank deal is good. Buying a bundle is saving time but even those bundles don't look like they have everything, still we have to buy gravel, heater, etc.. (do most fish really need heater nowadays?) But I like the filter on that amazon link, what do you think?

Sounds like you had a canister filter. I had a 50 gallon tank and ran a Canister filter meant for a 100 gallon tank. Only had to clean it out a couple times a year and the tank was always sparkling.
