Arris SB6121 Comcast modem - temperature?

ms2000 1,410 32 September 27, 2016 at 09:33 PM
Around Feb bought it on Amz following a SD alert.

Just installed it. It is working fine but it is pretty hot. Should I turn off overnight?

It should give two green light but mine seems just light and no green - the other two are blue. Is this is an issue?

Apparently it is a discontinued modem - am I loosing much as a result? I have 10mbs internet.

As Comcast internet customer, can u watch local TV channels? I heard set top boxes available on eBay won't work!

it's not hot. try don't put anything on top. or let the chipset facing up, or standing.

actual color doesn't matter, just remember blue is better, you can get one more blue if use gigabit router.

need to upgrade only when you can no longer get what you paid for at peak hours.

no more free channels, been encrypted.

Yup, they run hot, normally. Just be certain there is plenty of air space around the modem. Natural air convection will cool it.

That seems the challenge - I placed it behind the TV and it is a corner - there is mid tower HTPC which is normally turned off - one side is touching the metal case of the HTPC perhaps it is a good idea. Left couple inches to the other side where the router is. Using 1 foot cat5e to connect all. Turned it off last night though. I don't know what is more I could do other than mounting on the wall - then those bright blue lights are all distraction.

What makes DSL modem not so hot, not so big?

DSL vs. Cable - two completely different hardware chip sets, reflected in the overall performance of each.

If you want to dim the LEDs/lights, disassemble the plastic case, and tape a piece of sturdy/thick paper behind the display panel icons. It will dim/diffuse the light considerably.

Tape a strip of paper over the lights, which should diffuse their brightness a bit.

Depending on the setup, getting a longer ethernet cable to connect the modem and router may allow more optimum placement of the modem. Check monoprice.com for cheap cables.

Why many of these modems got refurbished - reliability/durability issues?

Also Arris TM822g has 2 telephone ports - who is the service provider for voice calls - does Comcast provides voice - how much - can u configure one of your own VoIP?

I had a new Zoom DOCSIS 3.0 modem that was smoked due to overheat, properly vented and all. The replacement refurb held up until I punted CC (good riddance!).

It does not have Comcast logo?

It looks like the one's w/ Comcast logo also acts as a hotspot providing WiFi using your electricity and your leased equipment possibly without disclosure. Does this not spark a Class Action?

Which modems do not have that feature?
