What's the difference between the internal and bare hard drive?

The Barracuda is a drive only. It doesn't come with retail packaging. It is geared toward standard desktop usage.

The NAS drive should run a bit cooler and put up with constant data transfers and vibrations from neighboring drives. Suited best for an array environment such as a NAS or home server. Not quite Enterprise grade, but closer than a standard drive when it comes to firmware and expected throughput... might come in a retail box.

I need an extra drive, 512 GB would be great for me. My computer is too slow.

Bought the 4TB blue at Staples when they had their deal and am very happy with it.
I haven't had any heating issues or crashing.
Great product.
I also have some WD but I resort to this one.

The silver version of the Seagate 4TB External is a whole dollar and a penny cheaper. And in my opinion, looks better.

How bout that, saved someone a dollar!

Can the seagate 4TB external be cracked open and used as internal?

EDIT: Nevermind, looks like they can: https://www.servethehome.com/seag...y-density/

it's a maybe, some have confirmed drive use standard sata interface (not guaranteed)
but you need to check height, very unlikely to fit a laptop

I was referring to the 3.5" drive, looks like it's shuckable!

The drive inside is 2.5" with Standard SATA, however, it has a 15mm height, so it will not fit in practically any laptop or gaming console, as most require 9.5mm or 12.5mm at the most.

Here is the drive inside: ST4000LM016 [seagate.com]

There is hope that someone will release a 3 TB HDD in the 9.5mm height though because Seagate recently released their new 2 TB 2.5" 7mm Notebook HDDs.

Re: the Plextor M.2 drive, the Samsung 960 EVO will be released in the next month for around the same price and will likely be a better performer.
