These guys do great guitar videos. Here is their video showing these guitars and what the cards do.

I've made the link cut to them installing a card in the guitar. The short answer to your question though, is they are little circuit boards that allow you to change the wiring of the guitar to do all sorts of odd things that are usually not possible without rewiring a guitar completely on the inside and then if you wanted something different you would have to completely change the wiring.

These cards instead use the excess wiring options already in the guitar combined with a circuit on the card to do interchangable wiring changes. There are like 10 or so cards and few of them do some cool things that I have never seen anyone wire their guitar to do.

Yes it's gimmicky and totally unnecessary but their really is no downside other than you might lose the card and then be force to have your guitar rewired. However after playing one of these for a while I doubt that will happen to more than a small % of people. You really just don't take the cards out that much at least in my experience.

Basically if you are a crotchety purist, don't buy this but otherwise this is an amazing price and if anything goes wrong it's really not that hard to make this a standard strat, the cost of which will still put you at the best sale price you will ever see on an American strat unless guitar prices go back down to 5 to 10 years ago's prices or you buy used. I worked at Guitar Center for 3 years and we never sold this high of quality Am. Strat for less than $1000. Not saying it's not possible but it is a unicorn deal if you get it.

The quality of the neck playability on these is ridiculous btw. Also you get a card to make this a SSS config although I'm sure some purist will argue how it's not the same, which is true, but most people are never going to be nick-picky enough to notice. Especially if you aren't already a cork sniffer about tone. I am and I still never care, and I love single coils.
THIS is the guitar deal people should jump on. Forget these $5 and $600 Mexican Fenders.

Have you played one before? There seems to be a good deal of hate for the personality cards, but I haven't met/talked to many people who have actually played a Strat with them before. I'm curious what your experience with them is, as I'm seriously considering this guitar (and actually want the HSS configuration).

I have one with the cards. Leave the standard card in it, forget about it, play it, count the money you saved by Fender closing these out.

Lower resale value.
If your card input messes up your guitar wont work plugged in.
That's why I'm not a big fan.

edit: also the door to get to the card is really weak. watching 1 video on youtube, the door breaks off as they are showing the product they are selling. lol

Personality cards = sad joke.

I don't know what Fender was thinking with this design. These cards won't be made in the future. If you lose the card, you may be SOL in the future.

yep....and its an old idea as well...its already been done many times before....yet Fender still poorly executed IMO.

*ugh* What were they thinking with these personality cards? They should be clearanced at 50% off given the diminished resale value and the high risk going forward.
