Edit: Back in stock as of 5:18 EST. This is a deal just being able to get it, I don't think we will see many discounts right away for this android box.

It's not hot or slick.
And I'm going to take a guess that Geekbuying and other stores would be offering it at a small discounted price.

They've had Mi boxes on Chinese etailer sites for a while, and those are aimed for the Chinese market with Chinese content (different software and hardware), so no, you won't see these US versions on there "at a small discounted price.".

So is this better for running KODI than an Amazon Fire TV that can be had for less than $85 at times?

I'm not sure how good the performance is since I don't yet own one, but I plan to go to Walmart today and see if they have one for sale.

Vs the Fire TV, the main advantage for me is the fact that I have a huge Ultraviolet library, and Amazon has gone full force in making sure that you can't play your UV content on their device. For a while they had a dumbed down version of Flixster that only played content in SD but that was pulled from the store. Later on, I was able to successfully sideload the android TV version of Cinema Now and it was working. Since then I've had people told me that stopped working, but I don't have a FireTV to test that anymore.

If Kodi is all you want it for, there are other Chinese android boxes that will do it in the $30 range. However, the Chinese boxes are an amalgamation of android tv and tablet Android. The key thing with the Mi box is 4k 60fps video, if that's important to you. Most of the other Chinese andrioid boxes will be 1080p or 720p. Kodi is easier to install on the Andorid boxes and I assume it will be the same for the Mi. I have a Nexus Player, a Chinese Android box, and Fire TV. The main difference in Kodi for these three is that the Amazon Kodi app has to be updated manually. I have not expereienced the Amazon censoring of the app that some users report.

If you want a better overall user experience I think the Fire TV is hard to beat in the android TV market. I think you will have more options for US content. The Amazon App store has it's own share of issues, but Google appears to be abandoning Google/Android TV. There appears to be more apps/games on the Fire TV than on Google Play optimized for android TV. I assume the US Mi box will use Google Play for apps and games. Don't get me wrong, the big apps are present in Android TV; Netflix, HBONow, Hulu, Beach Buggy Racing etc. But, if you are looking for gaming and other TV optimized content, there appear to be fewer apps for it on Google Play than Amazon App Store.

Of course you can side load or root and get more content on both Fire TV and Android boxes, but its not something most users want or can do.

TL/DR: If you only want Kodi check out other Chinese Android boxes. If you want more TV optimized Android content check out Fire TV/Amazon App Store.

EDIT: I'm seeing some different opinions/facts floating around about Amazon App Store. I'm only speaking from my experience. If mine is wrong pleas address.

It still mazes me that amazon encourages you to install their app store on your android phones, but doesn't give you that option for android tv devices.

So my Wal Mart has 6 of these, but when the guy scanned it, it wouldn't allow him to sell and the manager refused to override. She had no idea when she could sell it. Anyone know if walmart has some official in house release date or anything?

Bought one today at Walmart. They were locked behind the counter. You would have thought they were hiding the new unseen iPhone 8. No problem ringing up at the register.
