I don't think it will be a big upgrade from the 290x. The 390x is a rebrand of the 290x. Depending on how much you can overclock your 290x, this fury will probably give you a 5-10% performance increase. The 390x is only 5% behind the Fury in a lot of games. But some games do have a 10-15% difference. I upgraded to the nitro fury two months ago from a 290, and the difference is there but not huge. If you can hold off until the 490 next year that will be a big step like the 1070 was from the 970. This price of $254 is pretty good though, and if you can sell your 290x for $150, that makes the upgrade $104 plus tax. It is up to you whether $104 plus tax is worth 5-10% performance increase. There is also 1 more thing, the 290x has 4gb of vram, and at 1440p more will be used. Especially if you use antialiasing, but less antialiasing is needed at the higher resolution. The hbm on the fury is 4gb, but equivalent to 6gb because of its speed over gddr5. If the games you are playing are becoming bottlenecked by vram usage, paying $104+tax now may add to the decision to go for it. But I think the 290x is a strong card and amd cards age very well. If you want to experience what all those nvidia guys are experiencing with their jump from the 970 to the 1070, I think that will only happen with the 490.

But it's not as powerful as this card. 20% more performance if you don't mind the higher power draw

good deal. picked this card up for this price a few weeks ago. upgrade finally from my 670sli setup I had for almost 4 years now.
check out the doom vulkan reviews when comparing this or the fury x to the 1070/1080.
also, pick up an hp omen 32 1440p for 300 when on sale and laugh at your gsync brothers who had to spend 3 times as much, etc...

This is incredible price for a card that features HBM memory. It's way faster than RX480 too. I would pick this one over RX480 everytime at this price.
