I have this...maybe a different brand but looks identical. Its nice, however I have 2 things to note:
1) This does not hold any charge...therefore when the sun is not strong or there is a cloud in front or the sun is not directly overhead, the pump will not function. As soon as the cloud moves away, the pump will start again. I do not really mind this.
2) The attachments seem to be meant for more like a pond or large area and not really for a small bird bath. While they produce a very nice effect, they shoot water very high and out of the bird bath. I have tried all of the combinations of attachments and pretty much none of them work for a small bird bath unless you want to refill it literally 2x a day, every day. What I have done is just left the bare center tube exposed. The water comes out of this without much force and does not go high at all, it just sort of comes out of the top and falls right down. This works great for my bird bath. I lose the visual impact of the fountain, however.

I don't have this but i would say find the attachment that shoots closest to what you need and open up the holes more with a drill it should give you a little effect while staying in the bath

Hmm... I wonder if one of these could be modified to make a solar-powered portable swamp cooler. Looks like it's the right size for a Home Depot bucket lid, and definitely cheaper than buying the pump and solar panel separately. I guess the question is whether the panel could also drive the fan. That's probably where things would go wrong.

Great way to keep mosquitos from breeding in your pond or bird bath. Don't want to be spreading zika or west nile virus.

I wonder if this could be DIY'd. meaning to add a battery like those solar powered lights have. I'm clueless to how to do that kind of thing, but just thnk it would make it better. Thing is a watertight enclosure

You can wire a rechargeable battery in parallel with the pump however you'll have to figure out the following,

- does the solar panel produce enough amps to run the pump and charge the battery
- you'd have to size the battery correctly in accordance with the needs of the pump
- you'll have reseal everything, which i don't think it'll be that much of an issue.

It would be a fun diy

Would it be possible to limit the amount of light shining on it? Maybe less light would not let it pump water so high up.
