Been watching the price this is the best I've seen, if you're in the market for one. Excellent catalytic heater, can be used indoor or inside a tent with some ventilation. Good safety features.

Free shipping for order over $49 with code 16BARGAIN.

i have had one these for years. light it outside and let it burn off for a minute then bring it inside. but $60 refurb is not a good a price. its $80 new and a 10% coupon brings it to $72.

Thanks for posting. I was going to challenge you on the "using indoor " claim , but it seems it can..

Why can the Buddy heaters be used indoors safely?
6/25/2014 12:05 PM

"There are a couple of required safety features needed for ventfree heaters to be used indoors safely. A BURNER that is 99.9% efficient at burning all the gas is consumes so that very little CO or carbon monoxide is emitted. The heater also requires a ODS or Oxygen Depletion System that will shut off the heater if the Oxygen level drops to a still safe 18%. Because these heaters are portable, they also require a TIP SWITCH so if it they are knocked over the gas flow stops shutting off the flame and gas. Last there is a FLAME SENSOR safety shut-off system that will shut off all gas flow if the flame goes out."

I'll use it in a camper van, mainly to heat up the inside for a few minutes and then turn it off. Will never sleep with it on though. I also have a CO detector. People have used this in remote cabins and RVs, but I wouldn't use it without some kind of ventilation.

Yeah, purchasing one of these last year was what finally motivated me to also buy a CO detector. These Mr. Buddy Heaters have a low O2 sensor and cut off if the unit gets overturned, but you figure better safe than sorry.

I live in a very small rented house in Maine and bought this as an emergency source of backup heat in the event of an extended mid winter power outage. I've only function tested mine but it seems to kick out a fair bit of heat, even on the low setting. Realistically however, it won't effectively heat more than a single large room if the outside temps are below freezing.

I seem to recall seeing non-refurbs close to this price around mid-winter last year... not sure if I want to pull the trigger or wait

Yes and No. Similar units have gone on sale for $60 occasionally, but they are always the smaller model that only has a 4K/9K btu output. This is the larger model that is 6K btu on low and 12K btu on high. I've never seen these go for $60 new, this model usually only drops down to about $80 on sale. $60 for a factory refurb with full 1 yr warranty is a good deal. There is also a 18K btu model that is even bigger.

Good memory, I bought one last year around Black Friday for $70. So there's a good chance it will be at that price again in a few weeks.
However, I would buy this refurb'ed unit at $60.

Wrong. That unit is the smaller 9K btu unit, this refurb unit is the larger 12K btu unit. They are not the same. The smaller 9K unit goes on sale for $60 quite a bit, but not this 12K btu model. $60 for a refurb is a good deal.

Now I'm not so sure.... The Cabela's listing is confusing. Their description and specs say it is the smaller 4K/9K model, but the picture shows the 6K/12K model and also the Q&A section states it is the 6K/12K model also.

Without seeing one first, its hard to say which model you will end up with here.

By the way, if you buy this heater you might want to stock up on 1 lb bottle propane. To save some money, collect empty bottles at camp site's trash collection area (or even at your local recycling center). These empty bottles can be refilled from your BBQ grill 20 lbs tank using this type of adapter.

Just watch youtube for instructions. I used the over pressure valve purging method to refill it completely full without having to chill the small bottle; did it outside numerous times without any issue.

The only 6k/12k unit they make is the hunting buddy, and that one is obvious because it has camo on the face.
The other two units are this one, the portable buddy, and the big buddy, so I'm not quite sure which one you're referring to?

I think it is the portable Buddy. The Big Buddy has 3 heat settings and the Hunting one has distinct camo look.

The OP referenced the Q&A section, but looking in there the answer clearly references the hunting buddy.
So seems Cabelas merged the Q&A on these two products.
