Hello All,

Amazon has the NETGEAR Nighthawk R6700-100NAS AC1750 Smart Dual Band Wi-Fi Gigabit Router available for a final total of $88.85 after $20 Amazon coupon (discount shows at checkout). It's an older router that looks to be DD-WRT compatible.

Previous deals on this router via SD search shows prices around $100-$89, mostly at costco and a bit ymmv. At $108.85, it's the lowest it has been on Amazon and the $20 coupon reduces it further.

May not be a killer deal but it's not too bad and perhaps the best it has been outside of a Costco.

Install dd-wrt or dd-wrt Kong build and that's it. Don't look back. I refuse to buy routers these days that don't support 3rd party firmware. R7000 was and is still considered one of the best routers along with Asus RT-AC-6X/8X ones. I find Shibby Tomato better than dd-wrt and its stable for months.

Is this better than the asus ac1900?

Can you set Wi-Fi schedules on this hardware with ddwrt? Like to turn it off at night.... Had a router before and wasn't able to do the Wi-Fi schedule.

I bought one of these quite some time ago at Costco. I run DD-WRT on it. It is very stable, but DD-WRT doesn't support hardware accelerated NAT, so your internet throughout will be severely limited if you have a fast connection (maybe 300-400mbps down max).

Once you go to custom FW like Tomato or dd-wrt you will never use Netgear default one. They are so stable and have amazing features. But again it not for everyone because it requires some skill. I don't use all features but stability is most important.

Yes you can do that with Shibby Tomato and pretty sure some dd-wrt flavors have this feature. Worst case you can customize to QoS at a particular time. There are tons of ways one can do things with custom firmware.

Asus is a good router as well.

My friend raves about his R7000, and from what I'm reading it's very similar to that. (little slower .11N and one less USB port)

Picked on up, thanks OP.

You probably wont notice the difference. Stability and range on the Nighthawk is nuts though. I briefly owned a WRT1900ACS, and even with a custom firmware, it couldnt measure anywhere close to the range and reliability of the R7000..
I do live in a pretty congested area though, which proved troublesome for the factory radio management software in the Linksys(signal would quickly deteriorate, managing channels manually helped get it close to R7000 reliability)

Did they ever solve the driver issue? From what I read a couple of years ago, Broadcom had some proprietary way they used to manage the radios, so they wouldn't release their drivers to open source developers, which affects total throughput on custom firmware.
That is my only hesitation with custom firmwares, since I rely on my R7000 to bridge my media center to my network(transfer speeds hover between 80-110MB/s, which is pretty important to me to keep at or improve).
