Free ecobee3 smart WiFi thermostat for DTE energy customers. Ymmv

I received a flyer in the mail from dte energy (Michigan based gas/electric supplier). They are currently offering a free ecobee3 smart thermostat if you let them do the free in home energy consultation. They said you can sign up for it online via their website or call 1866-796-0512. I could not find any mention of the free thermostat on the website but when I called in the rep 100% assured me it was free and no strings were attached. I am a gas only customer so I am not sure what you need to do to qualify. It only took a few minutes to setup, however due to the popularity of the offer, they are booked up quite far (I have a Dec 6th appt and I called the day after I received the mailer on Tuesday). The rep also said they have quite a few of them in stock so chances are good they will have them, even a month or two out.

Got mine installed today! 100% free, the guy who came by and installed it was great! There are some stipulations to being able receive the free ecobee3 beside what the flier says (single family home & wifi). Your current setup, furnace and thermostat, have to be compatible with the ecobee3 (at least a 4-wire setup, 24-volt system).

Also, this isn't just the main unit, it's the $250 kit with the sensor!

This only applies to *gas* customers. I only have DTE electricity. They did indicate that the program is still going on, however. Good luck!

Legitimate, BUT it's borderline BS! I called the day I got the flyer, the rep claims that there are no appointments "in my area" ask if I wanted to go in the waiting list? I inquired only to be told by the first of the year there most likely won't be any available. I mean really? Kinda of a CROCK of BS. Otherwise I qualify for the installation. Pissed off about it!!

For those who are not eligible like me (DTE Electric only customer and apt living), you can take use of this $100 rebate [dteenergy.com].

It is YMMV. Some conditions apply like central AC required.

Another rebate. Consumer energy $50-$100 [consumersenergy.com]

Here is an excellent Wifi Thermostat you can buy for $102

Sensi Wifi Thermostat [amazon.com]

Amazon ratings speak for itself. It is very easy to install and it is the most compatible product in the market.
