I was going to buy the 3rd Generation on Black Friday for 200 USD but I found refurbished units at my local Microcenter for 100 USD. The box are sealed from the manufacturer with a 1 year manufacturer warranty.

Main difference between the 2nd and 3rd generation are:
Design
* A larger display (3.25 inch vs. 2.75 inch for 2nd Gen),
* A better resolution (229ppi vs. 183ppi for 2nd Gen),
* Slighly slimmer design (Smaller - 1.21" vs. 1.26" for 2nd Gen),

Functionnality
* All-new far-field sensor for viewing time and temperature information from a distance,
* Supports 5GHz wireless band (2.4 Ghz only for 2nd Gen),
* Furnace Heads-Up feature

Up to you to decide if those features are worth twice the price. For me, I was happy to save 100 USD.

2nd gen offers furnace heads up and works with Alexa as well. 5ghz is unnecessary for a thermostat, save it for bandwidth intensive devices. the only real difference is the updated design and weather on the standby screen. this is a very good deal

All gens of nest works with Alexa I believe. I have 1st gen, and with recent update, it works great with nest. Only drawback; it won't tell me the current temp without adding skill set. Good deal.

yep, and the furnace heads up to. 3rd gen (and arguably 2nd gen) is really just a cosmetic update

thanks! been looking to snag one of these for awhile but 200$ always seemed kind of crazy for what it does. $100 is definitely worth giving a shot especially since I asked Santa for the Google Home for Xmas

Has anyone used this with radiant heat? I have been looking for a good thermostat for my radiant heat system and was reading about the true radiant features.

Another reason I miss microcenter. They used to be in Santa Clara and then closed down a few years ago. Wish they will eventually ship.
