Lowest on Amazon. If you have $20 from Prime Photos then it's $160 + tax.

BB have this for $170 on BF.

It seems that in every discussion of large-capacity drives sooner or later someone's going to make two inevitable comments. One, about how it's not 7200rpm, and two, about how it's not really X TB, but a bit less than X TB.

Well, here's the deal. Large-capacity drives don't need to be fast, because they're usually used for backups, archives and media streaming, none of which require or benefit much from high RPM. The lower RPM makes them cheaper, quieter, cooler, more reliable and more energy-efficient. Trust me, you don't need and won't miss the higher speed of drives better suited for video editing, DB writes, transaction processing, etc.

As for the missing capacity, well, this is true of literally all drives, and isn't really missing, but a function of binary vs. decimal math. Google it. I've explained it too many times already. At least no one's asked this question...yet.

man, just bought this from bestbuy like 2 weeks ago at $230. solid deal at $180. have a seagate 5TB thats almost full so i picked this up to continue adding to my media collection. both drives are shared on my network. i was a little skeptical about it being one huge drive with all my media, but i think i'll be signing up for amazon web services or something similar to have a backup online. the one i got said it comes with 2 year warranty but i paid bestbuy for their 2 year replacement plan just in case to make an exchange easier if anything were to happen. and for all those WD vs Seagate, thats all personal experience, just as mine, i've had to send a WD back years ago. but all my seagates have been getting use everyday and no problems. went from 1tb seagate to 2tb, to 3tb, to 5tb, now this 8tb. sold the older ones and gave one to my nephew. all still working flawlessly. so i continue buying seagate for myself. my personal experience might be different from yours.

What's the consensus on reliability of 8tb drives at this moment? (Not just SG v. WD, mind.)

I remember them being easy to get online in previous years, not sure how these will be. I'm considering grabbing one now as well.
