They are most-definitely off brands in 2016 Televisions. Like Westinghouse, etc, they are brands that used to be great but are either sold to Chinese companies or a shell of their former selves. You don't see their TVs winning many (any?) awards these days...or this century.

Is there any benefit to this over the $298 Philips 55" 4k at walmart? I just ordered that one, both seem to be 60hz off brand 55" 4k TV's.

Philips is Smart TV with Ethernet/wifi, JVC is not (need streaming box).

Streaming box > Smart TV. You'll get more upgrades over the life of the product and there'll be less spying.
