SVM Giftcard Fraud/Stolen Cards

Hello,

I have seen posts scattered around here in various threads and thought it would be helpful to consolidate them and get some discussion here as well as data points on what cards may be easily compromised.

As with many others I purchased lots of gas cards on eBay from SVM Gift Cards for savings. I recently found that one of the Circle K gift cards had about $40 wiped off of it in the past week before I could use them up. I've got about another $700 worth purchased over the past couple of months, various brands, Exxon, Conoco, etc. all of which seem "safer." The Circle K is the only compromised one. But they're all through the same vendor so not really inspiring.

Any suggestions on recourse? SVM has offered no options and Circle K seems equally unwilling/unhelpful. Contemplating just taking the hit and selling them to a gift card reseller like Cardpool.

Been in the same situation. One of my Chevron Gas Cards remaining balance that I bought from them was "magically used". I tried speaking with them about it, but they were not very helpful. They started ignoring my messages. Horrible Customer Service. I couldn't do anything about especially since I couldn't do a PayPal dispute. In the end, I was short over $35.

I had over $500 dollars in Gas Gift Cards at the time. I got rid of them ASAP. Couldn't take the risk of my other gas cards be "magically used". Gave them to my family members. They drive a lot so they all got used up pretty fast. They were nice enough to pay me back Smilie I learned my lesson, I now try to stay away from gift cards , especially from SVM. Their slogan should be "if you don't use your gift cards fast enough, we use them for you!"

Hmm, I am still within the window for a PayPal dispute. Just barely, though. The CK gift card was purchased about 7 weeks ago.

Out of the window for an eBay dispute. The only problem is I purchased two other gift cards at the same time. Ugh, what a mess.

I have heard of some people using the card to buy something in store, then returning it within a short time to get a different card. That way if someone has the old card number then they can't swipe the value of the item.

Have you ever returned gas to a gas station? This logic doesn't really apply to the category, especially because gas stations sell the type of item that is not likely to be returned.

I don't think my card got skimmed, but I guess it is possible.

2 of my Circle K cards with $100 balances on them were wiped this past week 2 days before I tried to use them for the 1st time.
The problem is SVM sends out cards with sequential numbers in order...anyone who has purchased 2 or more cards from them for same store in same transaction can figure out all the activated card #s and run programs to check for activated cards with balances..ur gift card #s were most likely swiped by the person who ordered right before u did or right after u did or maybe 100 orders from u, and the same person wiped all the balances on cards issued between ur order & their order too. Ur swiper prolly loaded the #s into Gyft or whatever & just paid by showing the app.
Same reason y any gift cards in store w/the # exposed r not safe either, anyone can walk in & get the #s of the gift cards & just wait until someone buys the gift cards & activates it & use the balance off it.
The only gift cards in store that are safe are the ones with the paper rip off area over the card# but even those sometimes have #s in sequential #s too. The only gift cards that r really safe r the ones w/completely random #s and pins.
SVM said to contact Circle K...and they just created a ticket to corporate about it, doubt I'd hear back from them within 5-7 days Frown
Unfortunately I'm right outside of my 30 days eBay protection grrrr...

They should have 2 numbers on giftcards. One that is not shown but scanned by the cashier when you make your purchase and the other number strictly for checking balances.I too noticed a lot of giftcard companies have giftcards with sequel numbers that change by only 1 number .ex. 4687633201,next card would be 4687633202,etc. With all the giftcard apps out there it is too easy to make your own giftcard with someone elses giftcard number so it can be scanned as soon as it is found to have been activated by checking the numbers online.I noticed all my Burger king giftcards were like this with only 1 number changing. Thank goodness BK will replace your giftcards if stolen if you have registered them at their website,I won't but any giftcards because they are too easy to steal now.

Ya or just go back to the PIN method... I remember when paying anything with my GameStop card, I used to be asked for the PIN # on the back, but I haven't been ask that anymore in probably over a year... Blink

Not exactly like Paypal Digital Gift's allowing spiders/bots whatever to search thru their giftcard pages this time lolol.

Problem with SVM is they issue their physical gift cards in sequential order. The person who ordered right before u or right after u will most likely be able to guess with 100% accuracy what ur GC # is & load it in Gyft or some other app & pay using the created barcode w/ur GC info they accurately guessed. Or it could've been some customer a million orders ago thats running a program to check for activated card#s & have been consistently swiping balances each week from customers with their newly activated cards

Circle K gift cards can be loaded to Gyft and scanned? That's news to me.

Gyft also got hacked earlier this year and they were nice enough to tell us about it waaaaay after the fact, I lost some gift cards in that hack as well. Frown

Please report back on your experience with Circle K. I decided not to sell to Cardpool and will instead take a few long car trips, which should spend down the balances a bit quicker...

Quick update on resolution, Circle K responded by some miracle and I got a replacement card with the full disputed balance in the mail today. It will definitely be the first one I spend down...

Same here, miraculously they mailed me 2 giftcards for my 2 drained giftcards w/no explanation to what they found w/their research, just simply said these were my replacements in the letter.

EEK! UNFORTUNATELY, THE 2 GIFT CARDS THEY SENT ME ARE ALSO IN SEQUENTIAL ORDER Facepalm

ppl they sent cards to before or after me can easily drain my cards ugh....

Anybody know if Circle K stocks GC like Amazon/Starbucks/etc. and allows purchase of other gift cards with their own? That would be a way to get rid of these compromisable cards fast...

But the PINs aren't sequential.
