Most people don't realize, but these Fluval deals are probably the best deals on Black Friday this year.

FYI- It's $59.99 on Amazon right now if you don't have Petsmart nearby or not available for shipping

I have this, I thought it would be a nice self contained system but I have some complaints. The lighting is very flimsy and decides when to randomly work or not.

The filtration power is very low. There doesnt seem to be enough flow and our tank got pretty grimy with even just 6 neon tetras in it. I don't feed heavily at all and I tried introducing some plants to help out but they died out and got covered in algae.

I am sure there are ways to correct this with being extremely careful of what water you use to top it off with and adding various additives to help but I was hoping that mechanical filtration with a low bioload would be able to offset that.

You super overstocked it. 5 gallons can handle one betta. 6 neon tetras would need about a 20 gallon long (for the horizontal space to swim).

They're guppy sized fish. You can argue about the swimming space but the bioload itself should absolutely be able to be handled by a 5gallon mechanically filtered aquarium.

This is an awesome starter tank. I house 1 Betta and 2 horned Nerite snails in this tank. The light is over powering and will supply more than enough light to your plants. I have over 6 plants in the tank all alive and healthy. It's general rule of thumb 1 fish per 5 gallons. I'd recommend this tank considering the price.
