For those who are looking to expand your "smart" setups, this is the hub to get.

I currently own the Harmony Elite, which has the flagship remote and the hub, but I find that I use my phone more than the control, call me lazy but sometimes I have the phone closer to me and I just pick that up.

The beauty of this device as some have mentioned is pairing it with your smart devices.

Currently I have the following:

Harmony Elite (has this hub)
Google Home
Phillips Hue (bulbs and lightstrips)
Google Chromecast Ultra
Google Audio

Basically I can call up voice commands (Google Home) to turn my entire HT setup on. With this hub you can essentially turn the TV, AV receiver, cable box on and turn on your smart lights and dim them to a certain level, all in one command. This goes with casting videos on youtube, the Google Home communicates with this hub and will switch the chromecast to cast videos or play audio off my chromecast audio, all with the command "Hey Google, play suchandsuch on Chromecast Audio"... pretty sweet.

But this hub is a must and at 50 bucks you can pretty much run your entire HT setup with your phone.

Personally I'd wait for deal with the remote. Usually around $60-70. More worth it IMO. I thought I would solely use the app but the remote is sufficient 90% of the time.

This thing is sweet, even on it's own with just echo. Not only does it turn your tv on/off, change channels but you can pretty much program it to do any remote button with echo if you set it up as an activity. Each button or combination of buttons needs to be setup which takes a few minutes but once it's done, it's done. You do have to get creative with naming to not interfere with reserved echo commands like 'volume' so I use 'amplify' instead to turn up the tv volume.

It's also really nice cause it helps tie other devices into smartthings that don't natively work, like lutron caseta.

You can either control smartthings and lutron from harmony or tie lutron to harmony to smartthings, or both. It takes a little creativity on the programing, but doable.

That being said, I bought a mfg refurb with keyboard from ebay for $55, so this isn't that hot. Keyboard is so far not that useful but I only paid an extra $5 and it looked brand new with all accessories.

Yeah, this is just for the Hub. So you'd control it with your phone / tablet, or voice control with something like Amazon Echo.

For someone who hasn't yet chosen a side in the Amazon vs Google automation battle - does either present an advantage for use with Harmony Hub?

Echo supports it natively. It's useful for turning the AV system on and off, switching input source, and maybe changing channels.

You can probably use IFTTT also, for Echo and GH.

I agree. For only $20 more, it's nice to have the remote also.
