Amazon has the ASUS Zenbook UX330UA [amazon.com] for $679.00 before tax.

This appears to be an Amazon exclusive listing from what I can tell?

Cons:

DDR3 instead of DDR4 and it cannot be upgraded or replaced

Can anyone speak to the i5-7200U? Is the U a compromise at all? I know it must be better than the M series they typically try to sneak into laptops.

EDIT UPDATES:

KEYBOARD IS BACKLIT

TRACK PAD IS VERY QUIET, very nice. Huge improvement from the last zenbook line.

Memory is Dual channel DDR3

Graphics are Intel 620

Motherboard model UX330UAK with Intel Kaby Lake rev 02

Most Kaby Lake processors are paired with DDR4. It could be an error in the listing. I believe the Asus Q304UA at Best Buy said it was DDR3 with an i5-7200u processor but when people got the machine in, it showed it had DDR4.

The i5-7200u processor is a U model, which means it's made for low power usage and not to be a powerhouse. It has a 15W TDP. However this Kaby Lake 7th gen performs about 10% better than the 6th gen i5-6200u it replaces. And the HD620 graphics (that I presume this has) is much improved over the HD520.

Over a typical 800-850 version?

Well, like any ASUS laptop, nobody seems sure if the specs are correctly listed. They don't mention a backlit keyboard, and the review I found for the AH54 says it doesn't have one. We've got a comment that the UX330UA does, but this isn't the 3200x1800 version, and those ones are the only things ASUS actually posts on their website. They sort of act like the 1080p versions don't exist when they make their little marketing exploration pages.

The SSD is SATA3, so while it isn't bad at all, it could've maybe been M.2 but likely at the $800 price point. This will probably be the last wave of releases that use SATA3 interface. Don't worry, someone will point out that there is a chance this has M.2 because, again, ASUS is vague as shit about their specs on the website.

If you want a zenbook for a low price this seems to be the answer. If you cannot type, I would wait until we can confirm or deny the backlit tomorrow. Mine comes tomorrow and I'll update with the DDR quesions as well as backlit

It is 2.6 lbs, amazon shipping is 4 lbs. No zenbook is going to weigh more than 3.2 at the absolute max.

I noticed the review too, and someone says all UX330UA has backlit. I will update tomorrow when it arrives

Looks good. What are the negatives?

Weird stuff going on here. Reviews and tech details say 2.6 lbs, but the specs up top and elsewhere on the page read 4lbs. BIG difference.

Review mention lack of backlit keys, video says it has them.

Looks like it has USB-C so you can charge it with your phone charger when you forget the regular expensive proprietary power cord.

I wonder how long it will take before power cords aren't the most profitable things about laptops.

Asus is using almost the same model number for multiple revisions of the laptop. This one is the AH54 revision...yea, that helps a lot (not). Other manufacturers does it too, it is super annoying. I think this one has a backlighted keyboard (not 100% certain). And there is no way this thing is 4lbs (maybe with the charger/box). I have an older model and it is definitely under 3lbs.

Kaby Lake still supports DDR3L so it's possible Asus used that as they are trying to get rid of old memory stock. At this price, it's really not a deal breaker.

Sounds like the new Macbook Pro! They should charge $2,000 for it and tell everyone that it is for their own good.

you gest, but the macbook has aged so much due to its outdated internals that reviews for this laptop directly mention the Apple as a cross-shop. But its a no brainer at half the price.

For those who are interested, the description on Amazon about the weight is not accurate. It shows 4lbs, however if you watch the introduction video (it is on Amazon) you can see that the laptop is advertised as 1.2kg, which is ~2.65lbs.
