This phone was $40 at CVS about 2 weeks ago. They had 50% off all of their prepaid phones.

I got one and got it unlocked by simply asking AT&T to unlock it before I even opened the package by making a request as a non-AT&T customer here:

https://www.att.com/deviceunlock/#/

Takes a few business days to get the unlock code. Then once you get the unlock code, open up the package and remove the AT&T SIM without plugging in or turning on the phone. Put another carrier's SIM in the device and go through the unlock. After that the phone is unlocked and you can put the AT&T SIM back in the phone if you so choose.

8GB internal memory will be extremely limiting for either of these devices as Android and system files take 50% or more of that space.

AT&T doesn't give unlock code for prepaid phone anymore. Need to pay for 6 months.
False. I just did it 2 weeks ago on this exact phone that I bought from CVS for $40. Read my post above. You have to follow my instructions - get the unlock code before even opening the package.

Has a micro SD slot and runs Marshmallow so it has adoptable storage.

If I had not just bought one from CVS for less money, I would buy this phone.
I agreed. I was able to unlock an ATT LG Phoenix 2 go phone that I bought from best buy during black Friday last month. Just follow the OP unlock instructions.

Why would anyone pick this phone over LG Phoenix 2? this one has less memory, less ram , less resolution for same price as the LG.

I didn't realize that it only has 1GB of RAM, that does suck. I think the Super AMOLED screen is nice but I just bought this device for trade in purposes.

8gb storage is not enough for recent Android

Might be thinking of the non Go Phone brand @ Walmart.

This is not false, give it a try, I ran into the same problem and contact att, they told me they closed the gophone loop hole and no longer unlock gophones even if you never put a sim in and turned it on.

You need 6 months of service now to unlock gophones/prepaid phones with ATT. Before you could just buy gophones/prepaid phones and go crazy unlocking them without paying for service.

They just closed this loop hole, pretty much closed my ebay shop! MadMadMad

Is this J1?
Wait for J3 (J320A) to be around $80 again, it goes by Galaxy Express Prime LTE or whatever the heck name they made up for it because J3 is too confusing for "forgetful" US consumers, better confuse them more with a random name they'll forget.
