PSA: Lowes to Require ID that received Merchandise Card

+2 Deal Score
16,694 Views
Just left Lowes getting an online pickup and heard the cashier saying that the company is now going to require the ID that was used when the merchandise card was given to buy anything with the merchandise card. If you have a merchandise card that you bought at a discount hurry up and use it before its worthless.

The merchandise cards would be the ones they give you if you return something without a receipt.

I don't think that's the case(i might be wrong) . But a similar situation happened to me at homedepot the other day when i went to return an item with a receipt that i had paid for with a previously issued merchandise credit. The lady asked for my ID even though i had my receipt(She said it was a new policy), i almost refused to give her my ID but she was an older lady so i didn't wanna get into it with her.

Plus i don't think it makes a lot of sense for them to say "we will not accept our form of payment" if it wasn't issued to you. That sounds like a major lawsuit waiting to happen.

What if i got the merchandise card as a gift from a family member?? Or my recently disabled relative wants me to grab something for them with their merchandise credit??

Just my humble opinion...

I work for lowes and the recent change was to "combat" theft. It will occasionally require an ID to be present from when the merchandise card was issued.

As the merchandise credit is a benefit provided to a customer they have every right to refuse to take it as a form of payment without the original receiver present, my understanding is that it wont be for the ones that are the small stuff but for the people returning 100s of dollars worth of merchandise at once.

There is a contract you agree to when you recieve a merchandise card that states this card is for your use only, this has been in effect for a while but this is really just them enforcing it.

Im not saying its ideal but with the amount of tracking they can do now a days its real easy to not return anything "without a receipt"

@Wood: Newark, Delaware

@ravestar2002: The manager was answering some questions for me and I asked him if i were to receive a merchant card and gave it to my wife she wouldn't be allowed to use it? Even if we have same last name and same address. He said that would be correct and that he doesnt even think he could override that.

@Loan_Crusader: I think you thinking of the news that they would no longer work online. This is that they won't work in-store anymore unless you are the person that returned something without receipt that received the merchandise card in exchange.

@uselessPloy: From how they explained it to me some of these cards could be from theft that people walk in the store take something off the shelf, walk over to customer service and return it saying no receipt. The customer service desk being busy wasn't able to notice this happen. They return the item, the person takes the merchant card and sells it for pennys on the dollar since they don't care the value and anything is basically free money.

I do agree that almost anything should be able to track to find the receipt. Only hard times is if paying cash and you don't remember what day and specific time it was so they can look up the receipt.

Whenever I return an item purchased with a Gift Cards, they always give me the refund back in a Merchandise Credit. Which seems like a scam, since I always have the receipt and the original GC. They say they aren't able to refund the balance back onto the GC and Merchandise Credit is just "Store Policy". Though they've never asked me for ID, so I don't know how they'd link the Merch credit to me anyway.
But since I only buy stuff on dirt cheap clearance, stacked with the zip code discount trick, generated coupon codes, and pay for it with discounted GCs, it all evens out.

Zip code trick is just looking at all the stores in your area. Some stores have different prices then others. I've seen as much as a $70 difference in prices between 2 stores. Just like with Walmart, stores discount everything at different times. Lowe's just advertises it on their website and to see it switch what store you're looking at.

I just left Lowe's to get an answer for myself. Turns out they will not give out "Merchandise credit" anymore but now give "In-store Credit" cards. Difference is that the Merchandise cards people have now can be used by anyone during checkout. The new In-store cards attach an ID to the cards when issued.

That's not true. They can't take the merchandise back, and then not honor what they gave you for it in return.

Under what theory of law?

There is no legal issue at all with them making a merchandise credit non-transferable. What many people don't realize is that stores do not have to accept returns at all. Even for defective merchandise, they can have all sales final policies. Even if a product is recalled, the store that sold it to you does not have to accept it for a return, they can tell you to return it to the manufacturer.

Now if stores did that in the US, no one would shop at those stores but that is a different issue. Stores can have an all sales final policy and there is nothing wrong with that.

They don't have to allow you to do it.
