Kobo Aura ONE 7.8" waterproof ereader ~ $160 (USD) shipped from Indigo.ca

Through Dec. 31 Indigo.ca is offering 20% off when paying with MasterPass, and this works on electronics, including Kobo ereaders like the Aura ONE [indigo.ca]. I linked my Discover Card to my MasterPass account because that's the only card I have that doesn't assess foreign transaction fees. There are others, of course.

I think Indigo's shipping fees vary nominally depending on destination in the U.S. For me they charged 16.60 CAD. Also, e-bates offers 1% cashback on Indigo.ca electronics purchases.

The Aura ONE was 199.99 CAD + 16.60 CAD = 216.59 CAD. Or about 160 USD. See attachments for documentation.

What's the main attraction over Kindle Paperwhite, the water proofing?

great price. i've been stalking one of these for a while since i always felt the kindle was a bit too small and I hate amazon with a passion. lots of reviews of problems though, so i'm a bit hesitant. kobo seems like a half ass tech support setup as well.

Waterproofing, while nice, wasn't the main attraction for me. It was screen size. I also like the fact that the Aura ONE has a night setting that eliminates blue light, wavelengths that can be overly stimulating to the brain. Should make reading just before going to bed, or shots of reading during wakeful interludes at night, less mentally jarring. Also, I've got a lot of.epub ebooks and the Kindle won't read those (although converting those files to .mobi with a program like Calibre would make them Kindle-friendly.) And the Aura ONE has built in Overdrive, the program public libraries typically use to control ebook loans. Theoretically that means no other device like a PC is needed to mediate the borrowing of such titles.

a concern, for sure. Hopefully this new lot shipping in January will have some glitches remedied....

The size. The Kindle PaperWhite is 6" and this is 7.8". Much better for reading. Typography adjustments are another because Kindle is limited to a very limited and basic set of adjustments; Kobo has a much better set.

yesterday Indigo allowed the purchase of two Aura ONEs per order. Today they only allow one--and in fact, they have only one left. I'm still not sure if they've been accepting orders for readers that are actually in stock, or if they've been consigning orders to an incoming allotment. Either way, it appears this offer will be dead shortly.

that might be for the best at this point. i've been reading reviews of disappointed aura one owners for over an hour now. what worries me more than getting a lemon out of the box is what happens if it breaks down in 6 months? kobo seems to have no idea what the hell they're doing.

The Aura One has a stunning screen. I have owned a number of eReaders over the years, some Chinese 5", BN Nook, Sony 950, Kindle Paperwhite, a few Auras but the One has a screen that is just stunning.

Indigo says they hope to ship these on Jan. 3--suggesting they took orders against an incoming allotment that hasn't yet arrived.

Discover charged me $160.33, very close to my original estimate.

I'm amazed a domestic seller has been getting $300 for these on eBay (and $320 the week before Christmas): http://ebay.com/itm/272479416379
