Chase Sapphire Preferred Credit Card $95 Annual Fee Renewal ($60 Statement Credit) YMMV

My Chase Sapphire Preferred credit card annual fee is about to come in March. So just to see what would happen when I called Customer Service (1-800-432-3117) I spoke to a CSR and was very pleasant with her. I told her I have been a Chase customer for a very long time and knowing my $95 annual fee was going to be charged soon, I wanted to know if they would give me a one-time annual fee credit. The CSR said that due to the Chase Sapphire card being such a high value card, she couldn't offer a fee credit. She then asked if I would like to downgrade to a no annual-fee card. I then replied "I don't know if I want to do that yet, but are there any promotions to encourage me to renew the card?" She checked her system and said "OK, I can offer you a one-time statement credit of $60, would you like that?" I said I will definitely take the offer! I thanked her very much and hung up.

You won't get anything if you don't ask! I am very satisfied now only having to pay a $35 fee for this card renewal period! Hope you have the same success I did!

With the CSR being a much better card for me, I downgraded my CSP to a Freedom Unlimited

If you also have a CSR, there is no point of keeping CSP and paying even a single penny of annual fee for this.

I'm far from an expert, but I think I've read that you can. I may be wrong though.

Tried this a couple of weeks ago to no avail. Ended up biting the bullet and paying the full $95. They did try to offer me a different card as described above but I wanted to keep the Sapphire Rewards card because of the overall benefits.

Yes - but there's a workaround - you can downgrade to a sapphire and then switch to any product. http://www.doctorofcredit.com/cha...hange-tip/
