I contemplated posting this in The Lounge, but it's impossible to get an adult response in there. Anyway ...

I recently initiated a return via eBay for an item that was not as described. The seller received the item today, promptly issued a refund via PayPal directly and then, literally, moments later asked eBay to step in and help with the claim. About 10 minutes later I received an email from eBay stating that they found in the seller's favor and opted not to issue me a refund.

My question is: What benefit did the seller gain by doing it this way? Does his seller feedback not take the hit for the return? Just curious.

Outside of shipping fees, if you return the items I do not understand how you could not be given a refund, item as described or not. If there was no returns allowed\all sales final, then the seller should not have accepted it back and given a refund until after the claim was settled so I am not understanding what transpired here.

This seems like an error on Ebays end because if the item wasn't as described and the OP returned the item it seems he got his money back unless some how they will retract the funds? I think you should be ok if anything OP contact directly to Ebay.

I guess I will have to wait and see on this one. This is the first time I have experienced this.

Something like that happened to me. I couldn't leave feedback for that transactionand ebay wouldn't do anything since it was resolved.

See if you can leave feedback.

Yeah, it looks like I can. Still curious what the seller's game is.

This is an easy one.. seller sent you money via PayPal directly, instead of refunding through Ebay.
Ebay does not recognize that the seller sent a refund to you, therefore the case remains open, seller initiates a case informing Ebay that you have been issued a refund, seller tells them the transaction ID so that they can confirm, Ebay closes case in favor of seller since he refunded you already.
1. This closes out the case
2. Fees are refunded to the seller

So the seller avoids fees initially imposed upon him by eBay for the return? I'm also assuming that there is no/less negative impact upon the seller's feedback in this scenario. If this is the case though, why do sellers not always circumvent the eBay return system this way?

Huh? The seller does this to receive their fees back. The seller pays a fee based on the sell price of the item, if the buyer is refunded then the seller is also refunded the fees they paid.
The seller was already billed for the fees when the item sold, so they aren't avoiding anything.

I'm pretty sure this scenario is exactly the same as doing it the other way. The buyer might have mistakenly refunded through PayPal & didn't realize the Ebay case wouldn't close itself.

He did it this way deliberately. He asked eBay to step in within moments of sending me the refund via PayPal. I was just trying to understand why he did it this way.

9:22 PM: Received refund.
9:27 PM: Seller asked eBay to step in and help.
9:41 PM: eBay sends me this: "eBay Customer Support has reviewed the case and made a final decision. We've considered the case carefully and decided not to issue you a refund. We're sorry this didn't work out."

If the end result was going to be the same, why not refund it through the standard process? It's not like he's new to eBay. He has 30K ratings and I suspect another dozen accounts (same items, same lot #s, same item location, etc.).

You're reading too much into this..
It's possible Ebay was giving an error message or acting up when trying to refund.. I've had that happen before & had to call Ebay to close the case manually.

The only other thing I can think of is that maybe you can't leave feedback now? I would check that & let us know.
Other than that.. there really wouldn't be any benefit to doing it this way.
Ebay doesn't punish you for returns, they are a normal part of business.

Seller didn't get his money back.
Seller refunded through Paypal, Ebay closed the case because the seller already refunded the buyer.
