What is "better"?

They're inferior speakers to the r-14's. They both have a 90db sensitivty level, which is decent, but the r-14's can dig well below the recommended 80 hz crossover whereas these can barely hit 90, so you'd have to set your crossover slightly higher to accommodate.

well bellow 80hz?

are you sure they would sound good well bellow 80, i thought that's where a sub shines and bookshelves really struggle. no matter what the specs say

Not sure about labeling them "inferior", but since you're only referencing specs, I would agree with you, but unless you don't have a sub, the lower hz rating won't mean anything.

I also prefer direct radiators for surrounds ever since Dolby TrueHD and DTS HD has been available for the consumer. There is a lot more information going to your surrounds then before and not just ambient or environment driven audio. Place your direct radiators correctly and you'll be amazed how they're not localized.

You're correct: the sub should handle everything below 80 hz per THX specs.

The frequency response on the r-14's start at 64 hz. The problem is that is only at a specific power level, so if the volume is louder or softer than whatever that optimal level is, the frequency response would be higher. For this reason you want to get speakers that have a good 10hz frequency response BELOW 80 hz so there's overhead.

Inferior is a qualitative word and I didn't mean to imply that they are significantly worse speakers, they're not. The R-14's are better though and based on SD search history come up for $99 for a pair somewhat frequently. I'd gladly pay $20 more for a pair of R-14's over these.

I do have a subwoofer from SVS, fronts are Polk monitor series 2 70's, with Polk center. Surround are Klipsch rm-14
Being bookshelf and ported these surrounds are coming little to much ahead from walls and hence had to raise them in height so they don't hit you when you walk by. Since I moved them high up they are above my ear level and hence the direction does not hit me/listening position.

I'm trying to see these surrounds can avoid these problems
Being flatter they would not be bumped by walking around secondly would provide diffused sound to avoid the direction problems.

Yep, I agree with the last sentence for us enthusiasts, but definitely not a deal breaker for the masses.

My wife is going to kill me when she sees these show up... Crying

Got the center channel and a pair of bookshelves to replace the Z5500 speakers I'm using on a dedicated receiver. I'll keep using a pair of Z5500 surrounds for the rear and the sub. Technically, all of my speakers ARE Klipsh, lol.

I really like the look of these surrounds in the photos, however I do remember reading some reviewers being disappointed with the build quality/look

I'd probably buy these if my fronts had horn tweeters but they don't, so I won't be buying
