I have had this system or one identical to it for 5-6 years or so, and it has been absolutely fantastic. Sounds great, plenty of bass, and very discreet. I have never been watching something and thought I needed anything more. Steel at this price.

Surprisingly good reviews for such an inexpensive system.

Be aware that this is a starter system. I wouldn't buy it for a dedicated home theater, but for a bedroom or averages size living room it should be fine.

Yes. Here's one that'll do the job for $150. The combo will be way better than most soundbars.

How does this compare to HKTS-16? Price seems comparable, and both are 5.1

Can't speak for mono but Polk stands behind their products and has excellent customer service. I bought this set over 3 years ago and it sounds fantastic. I put it in a 12 x 15 room with a basic Panasonic receiver(like the Yamaha linked above) and wouldn't trade it for anything similarly priced or any sound bar on the market. Don't be fooled by small speakers and the woofer booms.

Haven't heard any of these, but going by the design and specs, I'd say the H/K is better than the Polks or Monoprice system mentioned above.

Can this plug in directly to the TV, or does it need a receiver? On the back it looks like the red/white analog connection - wouldn't this reduce quality compared to optical/HDMI (ARC)

How would this compare to the HW-K550 Soundbar + Wireless rear speakers?

If your tv has a built in tuner with 5.1 speaker outputs you're set so you answered your own question there. There's 3 ways you connect speakers: Bluetooth, banana plugs, or wires. These have the last 2. Sound loss is inevitable.

Unlikely. I've never seen a modern TV with 5.1 speaker outputs. Even 5.1 preamp outputs is almost unheard of.

I have the Samsung KS8000. 5.1 works fine with my Vizio sound bar but I'm looking for an upgrade...The TV uses the One Connect Box which has an optical and HDMI (ARC) connection. How would the polk speakers connect?

Would it be better than the 2016 Samsung HW-K550 Soundbar + Wireless rear speakers?

I'm debating these two setups. The Samsung would be cheaper at the end of the day with the EPP and look cleaner (bulk receiver not needed). But I would consider this Polk/Yamaha setup if you think the sound quality would be a significant difference.
