A qualifying Direct Deposit is defined as a recurring Direct Deposit of a paycheck, pension, Social Security or other regular monthly income electronically deposited by an employer or an outside agency into the Spend Account of a Virtual Wallet with Performance Select. The total amount of all qualifying Direct Deposits credited to your checking account must be at least $5,000 for Virtual Wallet with Performance Select. Credit card cash advance transfers, transfers from one account to another or deposits made at a branch or ATM do not qualify as Qualifying Direct Deposits.

If it's by an employer, I suppose so, but call your local bank to verify.

No, it looks like a total of $5000 in within 60 days of opening the account:

"The total amount of all qualifying Direct Deposits credited to your checking account must be at least $5,000 for Virtual Wallet with Performance Select."

I opened one of these accounts in late 2016. What they say in there fine print is a direct deposit and what they actually accept, are different. So, YMMV. I first tried a deposit from my Ally account, and it was seen as an ACH transfer. FAIL. I then tried a Cap One 360 account and PNC reported that as a direct deposit. PASS. Another caveat... they had an account termination fee of $25 if account closed within 6 months. Minimum deposit also required during those six months to avoid other fees.
