This modem uses the Broadcom BCM3384 chipset - a great alternative if you are trying to avoid modems that use Intel Puma 6 chipset like the Arris SB6190 or Netgear CM700 due to latency/jitter issues described in links below:

For those saying to buy a 3.1 modem or wait for 3.1 to drive down the prices of 3.0 modems, that's years away. I doubt you'll see this modem sell for more than$10-15 less in the next 12-18 months.

Plus the 3.1's cost twice as much as this. You could buy this, wait 2 years, buy a 3.1 for the same price and keep this as a backup.

And again, the number of channels has much more to do with congestion avoidance than what speed service you have. Each channel on the cable system is used by multiple people in your neighborhood as a shared limited speed pipe. The more channels you can bond, the better your odds at avoiding congestion. While 4 channels are "good enough" to support a lower speed tier, when everyone in the neighborhood is watching netflix you're stuck with the same 4 channels that the ISP configured the modem for at boot time. Those might fill up, but if you have a 24 or 32 channel modem you have more lanes to avoid traffic with. So your speed and quality of service will be better the more channels you have.

I live in the sticks and Comcast provisions my modem for 32 down and 4 up with 200/10 service, and I get 240/12 with great consistency of ping and throughput. With a 6141 (8/4) I got under 200/10 and the pings and throughput speeds wobbled all over the place.

Worth it at full price, but this is just a steal. No issues with mine for the 18 or so months I've had it. Have used with both Comcast Blast (150mbps) and RCN (150mbps). Currently bonded to 16 downstream channels and 2 upstream channels on RCN in the Greater Boston area.

Any router suggestions? I have a modem/router combination now and it's terrible.

I've installed several of these modems with the nighthawk x4s router. They work together flawlessly.

I've been using the netgear AC1750 (combined with the basic ARRIS cable modem) and it's been running far superior than the comcast modem/router unit.

If anything, get the AC standard for the routers.. that's where the new ones are geared towards.

I think TWC provide free modem these day, at least in my area.
Do you know what modem they provide? Is it 8x4? 16x4? 24x8? Curious how good the free one is.

I'm not sure since I'm still using my own now. Didn't bother to change.

But I'm pretty sure their modem should be good enough to at least support the speed you purchase from them. Hence, they seem very active on upgrading/replacing device. Same for AT&T here.

Yes, you'll need to buy a router to pair with this. In most cases, this is a superior option than a 2 in 1.
