I got this review from the actual Amcrest website on this system...

"If all you need is a simple system to unbox, run the cables, install the cameras and be done with it this is the best system. However, this system is not ONVIF compatible like it states in all the Docs and even the Techs say it is, UNTIL you press them and then they finally admit IT IS NOT ONVIF COMPATTIBLE. You have to buy thier camera's PERIOD.
If you would actually like to make the system useful by setting up the motion detection features, forget it, the software is so basic and there hasn't been an update in over a year. The poor documentation is confusing and the system is the farthest thing from intuititive. Fox ex the camera's have their own IP address starting with 17X.XX.XXX.XXX and its not changeble. the Motion dection settings are reversed 1 is the highest detection level not 10 like you would expect. Nowhere in the Docs does it give a clue, talking to Tech support is a waste of time, they can't or won't answer simple questions like, ONVIF compatibility, Which setting is the most sensitive, how do you connect another MFG's camera etc. I only payed $250 for the 8 camera NVR with Four 3mp camera's if I had payed the actual retail price $699 I would have returned the system and purchased a better ONVIF compliant system. The cameral's and the NVR work great, the best clearest picture 5 stars, but the implenetation of the software, the out right lying about ONVIF comapatiblity and the lack of any software/firmware updates is a deal breaker and at least a 2 star deduction"

I don't have these specific cameras, but the built-in night vision on these sort of cameras is usually marginal. I installed a separate, bright IR illuminator and the difference is "night and day" at 50-100 feet.

This is the illuminator I bought, and I would definitely buy it again. Has held up just fine outside for the half year that I've had it:

I don't see the $25 cameras. Or are you talking about if you order the 6 and 8 camera bundle it comes out to just $25 per additional camera.

It's $25 per additional camera when purchased with the NVR. No option to purchase separately

I have the 4-camera system of this and it rocks! Definitely better than the wireless options. That 8 camera set is a helluva deal.

Anyone know if the hard drive is a high quality one? This would make the 8 camera deal excellent, but if not, each of the 3 options is a fairly risky investment.

how's the night vision? is it clear? I bought a shitty system a month ago with 65' night vision and it sucked and basically useless at night.

In for the 8 camera setup, hard to pass up four additional cameras for $100. Should be a fun project.
