Here's a how to video i just made for anyone looking to open the case and take out the wd blue inside and reuse the firmware locked enclosure for another drive.. looks like this also stops excessive load cycles.

Connect it first as a USB external drive, then delete the partition, convert to GPT, then format as NTFS and you can use it as an internal. Warranty void.

Drive is a WD Blue, you have to use wdidle3 to stop excessive load cycles (google for instructions)

once you put the drive in a system and clear the drive of existing partitions and repartition and format it you'll have a regular WD 4tb hard drive. The data encryption happens if you use it as an external drive and write data to it, removing the drive and plugging it into a standard sata cable will result in no data being accessible.

you should run tests on the drive before you shuck it of course, getting the drive out of the clam shell without breaking any tabs isn't probably going to happen. google for videos on how to shuck the drive. some say you can still send the drive in for RMA but I'm going to guess YMMV on the success of that.

Also, I don't know about this model off 4tb drive but an 8tb drive purchased recently came formatted exFat and my PC refused to boot with the drive plugged in until I reformatted it GPT partition type. Almost thought I had a bad drive.

The 2.5" external WD drives have the USB interface that's not removable, these 3.5" drives just unplug from the interface revealing normal sata power and data connectors.
I used the Visa checkout 3 times last time a deal like this came through for BB. Just did one drive per transaction and got the discount each time.

Also don't need a Visa for Visa Checkout - it's kind of like Paypal you just register a card with them and set up any CC that links to it. Then you "pay" using the credentials you setup for the Visa Checkout service.

is the visa checkout $25 a one time use discount? Or it's for any transaction made with visa? TY

It should work fine if they aren't doing anything odd. WD external drives are a very part of the market, so it would be nuts to not support them.

That application was the very first thing that came to mind for me as well. I have a 2 TB drive in my PS4 but hope to get a PS4 Pro later this year. The 2 TB drive will remain in the PS4 to improve its resale value and help pay for the Pro replacement. The new firmware will make it convenient to use an external and wait until a really irresistible deal on a 2TB or larger bare drive comes along, if I ever feel compelled to replace the factory 1 TB drive.

Have you guys seen any of the wifi (computer free) 1-2t? Was that the one they were seeking at $90 earlier? This is a good deal... I'm just wondering if I should wait for wifi ?

I'm reading conflicting information on this one. some are saying there is some kind of hardware encryption that might prevent it from being used in another enclosure? I'd like to buy and throw in my UNRAID box but might not work.

I'm guessing it's just WD Blue or Red drive and reformatting it should be fine to use elsewhere...

Anyone have experience with this?

Yes this is great. I have the older version and couldn't have made a better purchase. It's worth it especially if you do a lot of gaming and can clear up some room on your XBox. Also data is read faster than the Xbox hard drive.
