I got it last time and love it. The picture quality is really amazing.

If you're unsure you would like the quality, you can dig through these photos [flickr.com] to get an idea, as they're all taken with A5000.

This won't fit in your pocket (well maybe jacket pocket) so you'll end up carrying it around in a pouch.

So the question is, will you put the pouch in your bag or on your belt, take out the camera, hope there is some battery life, and take a picture instead of just pulling out your iphone?

The sensor is much better than the iphone but the kit lens is horrible. At 16mm (where it always starts out) it will be a little sharper than the latest iphone but anything left of center will be about the same res as an iphone (assuming good light, low ISO). On the widest setting there's like 8% barrel distortion. Correctable but you loose some IQ.

If you take the time to zoom the kit lens in a bit (20mm or so) the IQ improves a lot.

Now if you don't mind sinking some bucks into a lens you can get some fantastic IQ but the problem is anything that's sony and decent is pricey. For example the 17-70mm kit upgrade is like $800. the 35mm (best first lens beyond the kit according to wire cutter) is like $400. The 50mm is $300.

Instead of paying through the nose for this camera plus a decent lens another alternative would be going with the canon EOS-M series for full compatability with your existing lens/flash. the EOS-M10 (goes for like $340 here) would be the most comparable to this model but there is no flash hot shoe. EOS-M3 would be the first current fully capable model with the M6 being the latest and greatest (just announced)

Ref for kit lens being "meh":

Verdict

The Sony E 16-50mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS broke a couple of records but unfortunately not in the positive sense. Its uncorrected distortion and vignetting figures are nothing short of insane. So Sony obviously doesn't want the lens to be used without enabled aberration compensation. This eases the pain in some respects. However, even so it doesn't make it a great lens. The inclusion of a 16mm looks highly attractive on paper but the truth is that the quality is insufficient here - at least on Sony's 24 megapixel sensor... The resolution improves the more you zoom out and the lens is actually pretty good in the medium to upper range. Thus we feel that Sony was somewhat too aggressive here. It would have made more sense to stick to a manageable range of -say- 20-50mm - just like Samsung did it with its really desirable pancake zoom lens. If you limit the Sony lens to this range it is actually pretty decent - apart from some higher than average CAs maybe.
In terms of build quality, it is a bit of a mixed bag. Just like its in-house cousins it features a metal body but the feel of the zoom and focus controls isn't all that convincing in our book. The quality of the AF is generally fine and it's quite baffling that Sony even managed to include an optical image stabilizer into this tiny housing.

However, the verdict remains that it isn't a really good lens.

The tiny iPhone 7 sensor (and it's fake background blur) will never come close to a sensor in a good point and shoot, much less an A5000.

This is a great price, much better than when I was after it. Are there still issues with these overheating? I had it saved on Amazon for awhile, then I noticed individuals thru Youtube were experiencing issues with the camera. It made me want to stick with Canon or try out a Nikon. For reference, the individuals were experiencing issues with overheating when shooting video.

for $275, you can't find any other interchangeable lens camera!! and i do have to say for $275, this camera does amazing quality!!! I have both A7rII and A7II, i am getting this as my pocket backup camera. something with decent quality, but don't have to worry about just throw it in my bag, while I am on the run. its amazing how small it is, and still got great quality!

Thinking of getting this or waiting for a a5100 deal (kind of want touch screen to focus). Anyone has suggestions? Will the a5100 ever get this cheap, maybe in a year or 2?

I shoot full frame canon but always found it a chore lugging the heavy weights around with the camera and lenses, especially since I had a kid. Instead I find myself using iPhone more than my canon. Is this camera significantly better than any good smart phones? Meaning is it really worth keeping a second device on you?

Hi, I just bought the Nikon 5300 2 lens kit at best buy for $599 I need it to post clothing items up for my online store and also for personal use for family activities and get togethers . I recently sold my Nikon 3200 and I liked it very much but I just used auto to take pictures. Would this be almost as good? It is half the price and also looks very compact which is a big plus.. TIA!
