P&G's problem with Tide is of their own marketing prowess aka The Tide Snob Effect. Yes, it's good detergent though not great anymore but consumer perception persists that it is head and shoulders (har har) better than the rest. Remember not so long ago when they still offered crummy 25¢ or 50¢ mqs, and they weren't short-dated or excluded travel/trial size either? They didn't have to offer great incentives because so many sheeple were well conditioned to pay through the nose to have "the best". (Scare quotes deliberate.)

Once Oxi-clean, A&H, all™ and other brands stepped up their marketing campaigns -- $3 Oxiclean MQs anyone? Buy (1) all™ get a free Snuggle store-specific promos, etc. -- P&G's market share slipped. I must say Tide pods were a genius solution to the revenue problem but made for even easier pilfering, which just shifted some of the market share problem to retailers. P&G's response to retailers' dilemmas? Create artificial pricing tiers for its mainline Tide (37-40 oz. @ $8.99 or 46-50oz @ $9.99), distribute higher face value coupons to consumers and offer a budget priced version, Tide Simply. It's clear that Tide prices topped out several years ago so P&G is stuck for options. Limiting paper coupons is the easiest way to stem the tide (har har har!) of product sold at low revenue margins.

(Phew.) I do believe my little used econ degree has finally paid off. LMAO

Probably doesn't matter much in this thread but anyone searching for Kerasal won't find it. Not a criticism, just a comment. Smilie

From coupons in the news... P&G is tired of resellers getting Qs (from a clipper, stealing the coupons, however they get them) and then buying huge amts of tide to do nothing but resell.
One way to help alleviate is to make everyone print.

I'm out of ink, waiting for a sale on ink, so I couldn't print if I tried to right now. To me it devalues the paper I buy on Sat/Sun if P&G just tells me to print it instead.

The ever popular "Not A Coupon" insert will live in infamy.

I have some tragic news for P&G. People are starting to figure out that at the end of the day, soap is soap, toothpaste is toothpaste, and lots of companies are perfectly capable of making generic stuff that is just as good. And watch out for Dollar Tree, because they are entering new product spaces that they have not played in before. About three weeks ago I found they are now selling a generic version of Nyquil. Admittedly it is a smaller bottle, but it had the same ingredients, worked just as well, and of course, $1.00. They play to win, and they are going to be a serious challenge to all the old time players out there like P&G, Pfizer, etc.

Just this weekend I discovered a Dollar Tree ripoff of Old Spice Body Wash and guess what. It smells like Old Spice, it cleans as good, it cost a dollar, it is 16 oz which is 2 oz more than the Old Spice bottle, and I don't have to screw around with a P&G coupon good only on flavor X or size X and play the will-it-or-wont-it-beep game and all that ensuing drama.

I don't have time for it and I am done, and that is saying a lot since I am one of the most brand loyal, resistant to change people that you would ever meet.

I will have to say that Nyquil and other such OTC I would rather buy a smaller bottle as I never finish b it and end up throwing the rest away. I need to check out the Old Spice clone. As far as sponges and other such things I am good with dollar tree
