The problem is that now the cable modems are moving on to DOCSIS 3.0... More streams, more channels.

The 6121 only did 4x4. Here is your list...

I suggest something like this next time it comes around.

I agree with TeeDub above.

You can pick up a refurb 6183 at Walmart for 57 right now with free shipping. If no good, you can always return to store. Amazon has it for 57 as well. If you can wait, you should be able to score one a few bucks cheaper.

getting a refurb versus new is not that big of a difference as far as performance ?

There is no difference in new vs refurbished internally... But, for $7, you may want the piece of mind that comes with a year warranty vs 30 days...

theoretically none. some people have reported registration issues with refurbs. I have a (purchased new) 6183 with Comcast FWIW.

https://mydeviceinfo.xfinity.com/...sb6121-365 claims speeds up to 101mbps on the 6121, but it does vary regionally and with line conditions.

For the most accurate speed test connect your computer via ethernet directly to the modem. If this results in faster speeds your router is the bottleneck.

If you decide to go with the 6183, I just saw a SD thread where woot.com has a refurb for 45 plus 5 shipping, and several comments of a 10 off code for new customers.

They're making excuses. Yes it is EOL, but it will still work fine for your speed. I'm on Comcast here, using a 6121 and hit 115-120 Mbps on the download side on a regular basis.

Note: This is my speed using a WIRED device. It drops to 50-75 Mbps using wireless because of interference from all of the other wireless AP's in the area. Frown

Iagree

How are you connecting your device when doing the speed test? Make sure you're connected directly to the modem, or at the very least on a wired (gigabit) connection. Wireless introduces too many variables, making it difficult to confirm that your modem (or any other single thing) is the problem.

Don't trust Comcast support. Level one support knows less about their own technology than you do. "End of life" is not a technical answer. They should've been able to explain to you in semi layman's tech terms why you need a new modem.

Definitely not true, I was getting 150mbps before I upgraded my modem since I got faster internet. You could try the SB6141, $20 bucks on amazon warehouse https://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-l...rds=sb6141
