I don't know that I'd want to void the warranty on an 8tb drive

What they were saying is that the HD is tied to the circuit board inside the case with an encrypted key. The HD only works with that specific circuit board.

Cheapter through Jet.com if you have the 15% code. For Newegg, tax kills the deal.

I formatted mine in the enclosure with a small partition just so it would show up in windows. Then after I installed it in the computer I deleted the partition and partitioned to the full size and formatted again. I would imagine you could just do it all in the enclosure.

What does not work is just reformatting the drive in the enclosure without first deleting the existing partition. My guess is they encrypt the partition from the factory and it does not automatically encrypt the drive even in the enclosure when you create a new partition. Kind of how you can choose to encrypt your drive in windows if you desire, but that is just speculation.

Once it goes bad, the data is lost either way

Yeah, but $200 is still an expensive loss to have with no replacement

What they are saying is that any data on the drive when in the enclosure is hardware encrypted and cannot be read when removed from the enclosure. If the enclosure dies but the hard drive still works all data on the drive is now unreadable.

The hard drive is able to be used as a normal drive if removed from the enclosure.

By time it actually fails, it will be a $100 to replace. Obviously, this is a guess based on variables but if it fails 18 months from now, its going to be $100.

My 2TB WD Ultra bought 18 months ago was roughly the same cost as the same 4TB version now.

Your overall point, though, is not missed.

Is this the same drive that was $190 last week at B&H?
